Question for you: are the Geneva Conventions still valid here? (In theory, in the four directives, and in the Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions is not envisaged any distinction of nationality, creed, sex or race, and the International Humanitarian Law is hypothetically also applicable in case of alien species... it only needs a new Additional Protocol).
Here it would be interesting to see if there is a military code to be observed in these situations, so as to also understand the potential consequences.
Who is wrong? The senior officer who orders to take no prisoners, or the soldier who ignores the order?
Forgive me, but these are teaching subjects that I regularly explain in Red Cross courses! XD
Also (please, forgive the insistence) by operating my veterinary knowledge and merging these with a modicum of knowledge in science fiction field, a prisoner who is also reptile (so a cold-blooded creature) is relatively easy to control whether the place where he is detained is provided with temperature controllers, so as to maintain the temperature stable at a level such as to render harmless the prisoner, leaving him in a state of lethargy or almost... and still too weak to react physically.

Exactly what I thought as well.
Mine was only one consideration not so much about "if" Alex would have spared her (his goal is clear, and this for him is an opportunity too good to spit on it), but how, potentially, he and the crew could have contained the prisoner in a state of relative security... Whereas, moreover, bringing her on board means to disobey a superior order... and that's why my considerations on the Geneva Conventions and/or military codes.
Maybe... maybe I should have been a bit less implicit, eh?

Maybe. But here comes the fun part. (This is also Alex gonna say to the Commanders face in a future Xcom comic).

May sound a little selfish but if we think about what Alex have gone through, it's understandable.

He sounds perfectly akin to the character instead. He is the classic "chaotic/neutral hero": to push him are personal reasons, not political ideologies or questions of faith... he wants to achieve his goal, and every means is permissible and only his moral principles put a stop to his choices.
However, these are dangerous characters, especially for themselves, because for them it is easy to get in trouble, even with the authorities that he "in his own way" is helping. Often this nature brings these characters to be left alone... or with a group of very few loyal friends ready to fight at his side, but institutions or armies tend not to consider him as a guide, and often even oppose him.
Moreover these characters even more easily attract villains, who find "inconvenient" a subject so rebellious, so they tend to want to "eliminate the problem" as soon as possible, by sending against him hordes of henchmen.
Undoubtedly, the type of protagonist who will never disappoint: you can never really predict what will happen! XD

what to do to trust in a viper or not trust the problem is how much do we know. can we justify our action in the battle field as simply just following orders or do we have to consider a higher moral ground. as a person that has wisdom but lack the wisdom to apply what can i say. in the heat of combat many incents have lost their lives. so does war turn us into monsters or are we the monster that bring hell to earth?
