funny thing is though... Vipers per XCOM 2 lore actually fluently know 10 human languages including english (it was part of their old Thin Man role).
course, suppose it could be argued Liat's from a recent batch they didn't bother to add the languages in on, that or she's from a non-english speaking area of the world

Some information was obtained, no one was hurt and everyone is happy... and all obtained simply with a little tact and diplomacy. Frankly I would say it is a complete success!
As paramedic, I know that gain the patient's trust is crucial if you want to be able to make a good intervention... and even personally I find more productive to be diplomatic rather than using intimidation.
Maybe for the military canons, especially in wartime, this line of reasoning may seem unorthodox, but you can not deny the effectiveness!

Not everyone is capable of doing such considerations... especially in wartime. The principle of humanity is too often pushed aside... or completely ignored.
I say only that in the world there are currently about 200 states... and only 117 of them have signed the Geneva Conventions and the Additional Protocols...

now to be fair. the xcom universe is a strange and hard one. this takes place in xcom 2 due to snake ladies. so aliens allready took over earth diplomatic/agressively. using humans to further extend an empire. and refining human bodies to create a strange new prodject to fight something worse aparently. so while evil is hard to point out. it is also easy to see why these people/ponys would be more agressive. they are not fighitng for an idea. they are fighting for humanity/equine sooo....yeah that makes peace talks kinda hardΒ

I was informed of some aspects of the plot time ago, but apparently I still had several shortcomings... Thank you for the explanation, now the overall picture is much clearer to me. ^^
However, as much hatred and distrust are considered "the norm" here, responding to enemy fire is one thing, but shooting someone brandishing a white flag...? Aside from the humanitarian side for a while (I admit to not knowing if in this environment the Geneva Conventions and the Additional Protocols still exist), militarily speaking is to be considered a success if a prisoner decides to cooperate, and the fact that he chooses to do it is because he was treated humanely means having obtained his confidence, so he will be more inclined to tell helpful information spontaneously even without the need for an interrogation, and you know that he is telling the truth since (with time, of corse) this respect becomes mutual... whereas if he is forced to speak against his will, even worse if by torture, is easier that he proves hatred and, therefore, maybe he will answer your questions, but you will always have the suspicion that he is not sincere... or at least that he is not telling you the whole truth.
The fact that I personally approve Alex's choice to resort to this type of approach rather than resorting to more brutal methods is another matter.

oh no. Dont think Im not happy hes trying a peaceful alternative to torture. Β Im just looking at things from a agme and lore standpoint. even Advent soldiers weapons armor and bodys are wired to self destruct. Β and sadly the Geneva convention do not really apply to the aliens because of the shear fact they really dont give two shits. they use painful scary weapons. I think they used gas a few times. while no atomic bombs have been drooped. they are not beyond killing innocents and destroying religious buildings to keep the masses underfoot.Β
Now. the reason for this and why. is...fuzzy at the most. because as a glatic empire. our backwater Alabama of a planet would not hold much in the way of want.Β
