After Luigi, Yoshi, Peach and Wario got their own game, it's about time that Toad got his own game. I'm still waiting for Daisy, Waluigi and Rosalina to get their own stand alone game. But this time, this version of Toad is known as Captain Toad, who often makes cameos in recent Super Mario games like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey. In fact, he got his own levels in Super Mario 3D World that will eventually inspire Nintendo to make a spin-off game based on those levels. Even to this day, people are still debating on Captain Toad's true identity as either the same Toad we all know as a miner or as his own stand-alone character. The gameplay is a puzzle-based platformer where you have to find stars and figure out how to reach it while also collecting coins and gems and avoiding enemies along the way. You can move the right pad or move around the Wii U Gamepad to move the camera around which is very useful to know your way. Even though Captain Toad can't jump, he does have power-ups and abilities. He can pick up vegetables under grass and throw them at enemies Super Mario Bros 2 style. Just like the other Super Mario games, there are the iconic mushrooms to allow Captain Toad to grow to his original size and to allow to take an extra hit from the enemies. The double cherry of Super Mario 3D World is back to make clones of Captain Toad to solve puzzles where the power-up and the clones are required. Instead of the Starman, there's a special mushroom that can turn Captain Toad invincible. And then there's the Super Pickax, it allows you to pick up grass and attack enemies for a limited time. As you can tell, this game succeeds as a spin-off to the Super Mario games by having similar elements to the regular games, even the plot of the game is a lot similar to the regular games where Captain Toad has to rescue Toadette who has been kidnapped by an enemy. Instead of Bowser, it's a giant bird called Wingo. About time, our heroes would fight a different villain than Bowser in an non-RPG game. There's also the mine cart levels which instead of being a puzzle, you have to move around the Wii U gamepad to aim at enemies and throw vegetables at them. Overall, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker may not be as iconic as Mario Kart or Paper Mario, but it's still a great game with similar elements of the regular Super Mario games with beautiful graphics and simplistic fun gameplay. I give it a 9/10. If this would be good enough to have a sequel or other characters have thier own spin-off, i honestly can't wait.
