Description
The finale for my set of Steven Universe portraits. Designed the Rose and Steven ones to fit together into one image and the results are lovely. Always found this one of the sweetest and most mysterious elements of the show.Amethyst Portrait:

I will definitely make more SU fanart at some point cos its kinda my favourite show at the moment by a country mile.

Before I get too much into this picture here I just want to say a big congratulations to your many other portraits you've done so far of the other gems there alexmorgaen , you are a brilliant fan and a marvellous artist to have taken on such a task of noting these wonderful characters, bravo.
Okay, so onto the pic already! Definitely have to say love the shots from deviants on the site here that have to with Steven and his mom and just the very over happy and complete feelings you can see when looking at Steven in those moments. Here especially there wouldn't be a thing that could get that kid down and kudos all the same to the idea behind an extraordinary portrait in such a narrow shot.
Must say though the way you cast off Rose is very well done, you don't overdo her gem glow you could say with her size being much larger and taller of that of Steven obviously. But what I mean is that you show that very direct and continuous form of her watching over Steven with all her care and wisdom like we see with her on the show.
For that sake you do very well with your fanart and heck I don't blame you one tiny bit how much that show has done so well to drip the heart in some of its episodes. But I digress. Overall though you did very well capturing the look of the show's style with the round faces, the thick arms and the overall cartoon arc with the way the characters are done.
Think its really amazing to try and compare Steven to Rose here and just wondering what make the two the same would be such a wonderful thing to ponder, lol. But you do well to show Steven in all his wonderful and youthful glory grinning ear to ear and ready to snag a doughnut or got into another adventure, wahoo!
Next I might say is very smooth and clean work with all the coloring here too, you got quite a skilled hand there alexmorgaen . You focus very well with your colors matching them to the original tones from the show but likewise I really enjoy the fact you don't use a traditional black line to outline each character and thus everything about this comes off so much more clean and softer to the eyes. Even the way you variate the shades on the skin or the hands of Rose show's good attention to lighting and shadowing but also making those features seem more detailed like the definition of Steven's face, Rose's endless curls and flowing hair, or just seeing how the light shines down on both of them.
Its all very hard to try and sum this all up into one sentence but that goes to show how talented you are with your work. Keep that up and as well please keep watching the show, I know its got plenty more mystery and heart to show us. ^-^

oh wow, i'm flattered. thank you so much, it feels very strange having such detailed feedback on my work
i was initally going to keep them as two separate portraits but i realised how nice it would be to have an image of the two together (lots of symbolism and cuteness, haha).
also, thanks for the line-art compliments. the amount i managed to improve my line-art while making the set is crazy, hope to use that new skill in lots of future drawings!
will definitely be doing more Steven Universe fanart in the future... it'll probably be a set of pictures of fusions, or I might round out the current set with Lion and Lapis.

Well don't feel weird at all there Alex, happen to do this thing all the time and just best to go along for the ride. ^O^
Nice mention of the symbolism between them and truthfully we see Steven always never side by side with his mother, it feel in a way very right to actually wonder what they would be like together if there was that chance. In short, good on you to do this as one picture.
You'll be sure to use many more skills in your arsenal of art from seeing your previous work and where you can go from there Alex. Still say though a big thumbs up to yourself on being able to get to the level you are now, that itself takes alot of patience and time for any artist to tackle.
I'm sure as the show goes along you'll be coming back to it adding more characters for you to draw. It isn't showing any sign of it slowing down and do hope there's more Steven Universe fan work on the DA from deviants like yourself, nuff said.
