Description
Conceptions of Gravity:Completed June 4th, 2011
Approx 5-6 hours of work spread over the course of a week
Feel free to critique me in the comments. I would love to hear what I could improve!
There are a few problems with it that I've noticed, but I couldn't seem to solve them. Ah well.
I'm burnt out. The only thing that kept me going through the last part of this evening was my girlfriend and my music. Infinite kudos to them.

very nice and i see you've finally nailed down the dark side of the planet, the only problem I see is the atmosphere glow on the dark side, as far as i recall, it doesn't usually happen on that side unless you have another light source directly behind the planet, though you did do it correctly on the moon.
one question though, how do you do the nebula? i can never seem to get those right

Yeah. for the glow on the large planet I felt like playing around with the atmosphere, and I thought having a continuous glow gave the image a more full look. I didn't really think about the, erm, reality? behind it. I'll use the secondary light source behind the planet xP
As for the nebula, it was pretty simple. I used soft round brush and a very light blue colour, and I just did long brush strokes, like rays of sunlight. Following that, I blurred those rays. From there, I just layered a few cloud stocks i've snapped with my camera over the years and used the layer modes 'overlay' and 'soft light' to get a desired effect, (as well as using their opacities.)
After that I just went through and did touchups, removing parts that didn't look good and filling in others with some basic brush colouring and more cloud stock on lower opacity.
To be honest, my nebula making is different everytime. I started using tutorials, but I found them to hard to follow. I think it's about letting go and just trying multitudes of different things!

Oooooooooooooooo... I love the glowing atmosphere!!!! I love that it continues even around the dark edge!!! I completely believe this large planet! The terrain and clouding looks real, and the atmosphere is perfect!
I also like the concept with the light rays nebula shining onto it. It looks as though the "stars" are more used as a fairy dusting effect with this theme. To judge this part of the picture as a concept, rather than utter realism, it looks great!
Nothing in this really screams that it is too grainy or too much out of place with the theme. So it's overall a successful piece! (With an astounding planet!)
OH! And I love the title too, haha- I like how it fades! Real Sci-fi touch!

Haha, thanks for your kind words! I decided to try working with a more stylistic feel, rather than going for realism. I'm not sure if I entirely succeeded, I rather got a mixing pot of all sorts. Ah well, thanks again!
