Description From high atop her palace balcony Arian watched thousands upon thousands of Imperial troopers marching past in tight, perfect formations.  Her priceless royal armour was becoming increasingly uncomfortable and she wished the Unification Day parade would end.  The Alorian crowds cheered as the soldiers passed, rose petals filled the air and songs of victory played, recounting how the five warring kingdoms where brought together under the might of Aloria, to form the Empire!  Royal guard Kalin beamed, happy to back in proper armour she soaking in the grandeur of the momentous spectacle!

"Yes, yes, strength in unity, a new golden age for all... gather my attendants, I wish to return to my chambers!" The princess moaned.
"Your Grace! The Navy contingent has yet to pass, and then you must observe the Nursing Crops.... and finally the Imperial Corps of Engineers!" Kalin said, reminding Arian of her mother's command.
"Sigh! Very well! I suppose these lowly commoners have earned a glimpse of their rulers!" She said haughty.
"But I am going to need a long soak after enduring this endless torment!"

Design note: The royal guards appear to lack protection around the critical "heart" area of their armour, but this is because they are symbolically pledging their bodies to their masters, and proving their bravery and skill in combat.

This was a fun little painting, mostly an excuse to draw some intricate dress armour for Arian! Below are some more Arian (and family) images.

She looks like a fine warrior, though I doubt she has kept up to date on her combat lessons.
Luckily she is constantly surrounded by dozens of deadly warriors sworn to protect her.

As far as Arian is concerned, I don't think she has to worry about anything more than just "looking the part". For the rest, her guard has got it covered.

Thanks! I wanted to make her suit of armour as over the top as possible... but still look elegant.

Ah, at last we get to see the lovely Arian at work.

Arian's dress armor makes me think of fantasy Renaissance style. Is it just for show or it's functional, too, in case any pesky assassins show up? And is that rare black shinium in Kalin's armor? I like Kalin's sword; an 'Alorian claymore, perhaps?

Seems Kalin has a similar role to the fools that whispered to the Roman generals drinking in the glory of their victory parades, "Remember, thou art mortal."  Only Kalin says to Arian, "Now remember what Mom told you!"

Thanks! Arian's suit was fun to draw and paint.
As for Kalin, she has her hands full keeping Arian safe, be it from the blade of an assassin or the wrath of her mother!

First Empire problems much Arian?

Though considering how she spends her free time I can see this would be a drag for her!

Alexx-C In reply to Darianblood [2018-01-21 16:35:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, she is missing valuable time in her spa chamber, being bathed and lotioned and massaged.  Luckily she will meet with her high lady friends after the parade, to relax in her palace gardens.
Everything else seems like quite a chore.

Pretty armor ! Why didn't making it comfy inside ? Since it's only for honorary times,no need to be perfectly useful for a battle.

I'm sure the armour is extremely comfortable and light... as it was made by the finest craftsman in the empire!
But any time Arian is forced to "work" is a major inconvenience to her.

The royal armor design is awesome, but there are some thick blood vessels running through the thighs. Of course, this should be a ceremonial outfit not fit for combat. I cannot imagine Lady Arian risking her physical safety in hand to hand combat no matter how much protection she’s wearing!

On the other hand, With Arian’s breast plate Kalin should be combat ready.

Alexx-C In reply to LordRudsmore [2018-01-21 16:43:19 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, the suit is more for show then actual combat!
Arian frequently skips her combat training classes (not to mention her etiquette for ladies classes, and her lessons in Alorian law and civics lessons), ins tread relying on her guards to protect her.

Thanks so much! This one was fun to paint, and it is nice to see Arian doing something more then lying around, being attended to by her servants.

Naughty-b-Nature In reply to Alexx-C [2018-02-23 13:20:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, lying around can be a piece of art too. Hidden craftmanship if you ask me.

And it might be a good idea to heat things up a bit for Arian. Maybe her mother, the Knights or Senya could attend to that?

While I have some things to say about a double edged sword without a haft, I do like the sword Kalin is holding.

Alexx-C In reply to IxisNyx [2018-01-21 08:05:25 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that sword would be quite dangerous to the user! Perhaps I should add some hand protection.

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

scorpionlover42 In reply to Alexx-C [2018-01-21 14:29:54 +0000 UTC]

But it Kalin is wearing black shinium gauntlets, she would have good hand protection, would she not? An opponent who thinks they've just delivered a crippling blow might get a nasty comeback.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

IxisNyx In reply to Alexx-C [2018-01-21 10:28:35 +0000 UTC]

danger to the user from the sword directly isnt really a big issue here though I can see how you could have issues if yur not keeping a firm grip and decide to thrust. The main problem is protection from other swords and locking up. The T piece between the handel and the blade is there to make sure that the oposing blade doesnt slide down your own blade and take your fingers. in addition you can use it to lock up an oponants blade for any number of tactical reasons which boil down to making sure the swords stop swinging for a bit.

All that sword info asside by no means am I saying you should change your design here. It does look good.

Also with some of your other pieces with machette like swords you absolutely dont need a halft cause those are slashing weapons made for swings rather than thrusts. Those are actually some of my favorite kinds of swords.  : D

Alexx-C In reply to IxisNyx [2018-01-21 16:49:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the insight! I designed this sword for looking cool then being functional.
Perhaps this type of long sword was slicing down on groups of would-be assassins, or maybe executing enemies of the crown.

Daggerhammer In reply to Alexx-C [2018-01-21 09:49:49 +0000 UTC]

Not actually an uncommon design in some eras.  For example, check out a Shashka, Shirasaya, or machete.  Extremely long blades aren't intended for clashes so they sometimes didn't bother with guards either.  The main thing was making sure you had a good grip.  Many modern sword designs are also guardless.  It's not a GOOD design choice, but it's one that has been made, usually for ease of concealment.  Try claiming your walking stick has full quillons without people immediately suspecting it's a sword-cane.  Some greek and roman swords didn't have guards either, and the Kusanagi-No-Tsurugi (of imperial Japanese treasure fame) is allegedly a more or less guardless sword (allegedly because nobody's seen it in so long people are starting to doubt it still exists, if it ever really did at all, despite it supposedly being held in a temple and brought out for imperial coronations.... covered).
