Description EDIT: Took some critique from here and from class and spiffed it up a tad! A couple things (namely the light beam) I don't really like, personally, buuut it was heavily suggested I add it in class so I did. Here is the old version if you liked it better:

Sorry, not sorry I've been submitting like crazy lately.

Finished HW assignment I figured I would share. We had to design a vehicle for our worlds and I sat there like "... but my world is dinosaurs?"
What sort of vehicle could I create for something like that? Well, the antagonist needs to transport his resources somehow... why not a raft? Logs floats right? Sure!

Of course, a lot of logical tweaking was done to accomplish this but hey, I designed a raft that doesn't use things like ropes. If it's enough for cartoony prehistoric critters to run around on, I consider that successful.

As for the image.... it's... it's an image. There are things I like about it and things I don't like. Things that went right and things that went wrong. But it's nice. Was going to put some of the other cast in that blank spot to the right but I liked the way I painted the trees so I... just decided not to 8)

Also done in a limited palette! I'm going to experiment with those more after getting some advice this weekend on it.
Speaking of, I'm going to reply to all my journal comments when I can! I've read them all so far though <3

BOOM GET OFF CAN'T YOU SEE THESE MINIONS ARE BUSY!

This is one of those pictures that one can just stare at for hours to drink in all the little details and find all the fun things going on! =^^=

I see the point of the light shaft to highlight the hero and make him stand out more...  Thinking on it, I wonder if a lens flare with convenient halo would have worked as well?  (The only thing I don't like about the shaft is that it makes that area seem washed out....

Anything else I can think of seems like it would detrace from our hero (Spray / rainbow / large splash something like that...)

I'm glad it achieved that! It's fun playing with details and little easter eggs. ^^

A lens flare or something of that type could certainly work! I'll try playing around with that as well when I go back to it again in a week or two! Thanks ^^

I'm not a huge fan of the light beam myself (feel like it kills Boom's colors a bit?) HOWEVER it definitely leads the eye right smack-dab to who's important. 8D I love how the coconut raft turned out!

THAT'S HOW I FEEL like it's really kinda gross BUT it helps draw the eye so I'll probably figure out a better way to make it work and go from there!
Thanks also! 8D

I don't know if it would help if the beam was behind the coconut palms instead of in front maybe? Or if it was a different color variant even? I can't quite put my finger on it but best of luck coming up with an idea!

This still is looking very nice and I do like the addition of the sun beam as it draws further attention across the image, bringing focus to your main little dino.
That being said, it is a touch prominent, have you tried toning it down a bit? For a natural environment, there wouldn't often be a single beam of light shining through on its own at such intensity as it is, so it kind of breaks the illusion of the world your building with it as is.

AlfaFilly In reply to TheWolvenEstates [2017-02-11 23:49:26 +0000 UTC]

I agree! There's actually more beams in the image, I just lowered their transparency so low you can barely see them. Here they are full blast: THESE SUNBEAMS ARE OUT OF CONTROL
I don't really think they work like this though? Like they wash everything out and make it too cluttered? Do you have any suggestions how to adjust it? If I lower the transparency too much it looks washy.

TheWolvenEstates In reply to AlfaFilly [2017-02-12 00:11:09 +0000 UTC]

Are they all together or can you separate the beams? Maybe playing around with some higher and others lower transparency would work. I would recommend in that case to keep larger beams on the lower end of transparency, letting the smaller beams be the accent and draw more attention without washing out the pic. Can even overlay some beams to add a bit more dimension, with closer beams being less transparent then further.
Be careful not to add too many beams, though. I would advise keeping within the range of small odds, so 3-5. Odds to prevent it looking to mechanically, since the human eye is prone to looking for symmetry and evens.

Ooh, this is all good tips to try! I'll definitely play around with everything and see what works best. Overlaying might be a good choice to create that depth. Really good point about the odds too!

Makes complete sense, that is one of the reasons why early civilizations started near rivers, sources of food, water, transportation... =^^=

AlfaFilly In reply to tbolt [2017-02-08 05:28:14 +0000 UTC]

Very true, indeed! I still get amazed at the things early people could do with what little they had. They used their resources to the upmost. ^^

Good thinking!
I wouldn't be sure what to do for a vehicle in dino-land either
Another animal maybe, but a raft is a better idea ^^

A LOT of people chose mounts for their stories so I considered it too, but since my story is all-critters I didn't want to design ANOTHER critter so I went with something inanimate to switch it up! Rather glad I did!

As am I!
Not to mention the raft seems to reflect the character's personalities better than a mount would.

The limited color pallet actually made the piece more powerful. I had always loved your style in general but this actually shows your skill set very well as it's not something you do normally, making it easier to see the vocal point of the image itself (the berries "pop" with being surrounded by the cooler colors. Even when it's a cooler red as well.) I think the only problem I see in the piece is that the shading on Boom and the minions seems slightly flat, but I fully understand if you purposely didn't shade them.

AlfaFilly In reply to Merdragon [2017-02-07 19:56:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it! I think the palettes help me especially since I've been doing sparkle rainbow colors for so many years that I kinda need the restriction to help me ya know? And it does help!

I totally agree! I think they need some shading OR no shading over everything. The only reason I didn't shade it was cause deadlines (it was due today) but I might go back and tweak still!

Merdragon In reply to AlfaFilly [2017-02-07 20:00:30 +0000 UTC]

Lol, yeah, it is nice to see you experimenting with color (though I do enjoy your extremely colorful style), and restricting the colors will help you with different moods as you continue with your concepts and stories when you need a more subdue color pallet.

I would be excited to see the tweaked version if you decide to post it up because I think the shading would help with what you see problems with in the image as well.

AlfaFilly In reply to Merdragon [2017-02-11 22:45:26 +0000 UTC]

It's funny, I have a lot of conflict on what I should do with my color choices. Part of me wants to get more sophisticated with it, the other part wants to embrace the sparkle and intensify it (like bright neons and complexities). In the end... I can do both, really. I just need to push it on both ends instead of being stuck in the middle in my safe zone!

I just reuploaded the adjusted version! Some parts I like better, other parts... not really. I'll probably attempt a third pass on it a couple weeks from now when we need to submit our final book.

Merdragon In reply to AlfaFilly [2017-02-11 22:56:55 +0000 UTC]

I get why they suggested it as during that time it would have a Strange light source, but I totally get why you don't personally like it because it... changes the mood. But I think it would help stepping away from it and then working back on a couple of weeks later. Sometimes fresh eyes help with what you don't see the first time around.

AlfaFilly In reply to Merdragon [2017-02-11 23:51:14 +0000 UTC]

Definitely a good idea! I think I'll give that a shot and see if it improves it. It can be tricky and frustrating sometimes when you have a vision in your head but can't seem to make it come to fruition!

Merdragon In reply to AlfaFilly [2017-02-12 00:36:15 +0000 UTC]
