Description
The frogoby (Ranichthys batrachus) is a future amphibious fish from Antarctica, which will become warmer due to a mix of global warming and continental drift (the antarctic peninsula will be located well within the southern hemisphere’s temperate zone). Despite more suitable to land vertebrates, future antarctica will still be separated from other landmasses by thousands of km of ocean, impossible to cross for some vertebrate groups such as amphibians. Instead of frogs, the future swamps and freshwater ponds of antarctica are inhabited by amphibious fish, being the frogoby the most froglike of all. Frogobies are descended from goby-like nothotenids, the most common fishes in today’s antarctic waters. Some of the coastal nothotenids will adapt to freshwater and conquer the river basins and lakes of future ice-free antarctica, eventually coming out of water to catch insects on the shore. Frogobies spend around a 90% of their time on land, but do not venture far from water as they need to remain wet to breathe through the skin. They are the most agile of the amphibious fish, being able to hop as frogs do thanks to a pair of limb-like pectoral fins.
