as I go from the first pic toward the finished pic, it feels like she's transforming from an anime woman into a real woman :0

Even seeing it, I'm not sure I can figure it out. O_o
Very nice, though. Her hair, the metal, the edges to the layers of the dress... those, I like most.
Hmm... the last step might have been the most important to make it look realistic. Was that mainly just adjusting brightness and contrast or something, or did you keep adding to the colors? Because if that's just adjusting the contrast and such, it would be interesting.

The last step is probably mostly color balance and also some shifts in temperature of highlights and shadows. The previous version was so warm that it kinda destroyed the illusion so I had to fix it :0

It's amazing how much that changes it. ^_^
...how'd you know how much to adjust it? When I draw stuff, I can't seem to 'see' what I'm working on. So I can never tell how much to adjust anything or when I've gone too far. I've been working on a little thing the past few days, and I keep tweaking the lines on it and not knowing how it looks best (it might be a little different from color balancing though, but it's still about adjusting things).

i got a question, i asume you draw in photoshop. Do you lock the pixels of your layer before adding shading and ligthning? And i also would like to know how many layers did you make for this.
It's a great painting, you are the master of realism.
