Thank you so much! Hehe, I took soooo many photos trying to get a successful one of a seagull! I never thought it would be so difficult to take a photo of a bird in flight!

I think the best would be, if we could fly as well..

Great focus, and the background is really complementary.

Good shot i find it hard to capture good shots of birds while moving. Just curious what lens was used and also what focusing did you use? were you using the 51 point tracking? or just lucky?
I think you could improve this with a crop. I think having a little less space behind the bird and more infront and maybe below. That way you kind of get a feel of where he is going or something. Maybe try it and see how it turns out if you can Hope this helps!

Yeah, it's so difficult. This capture was like 1 out of 40 that turned out properly focussed. I was using my Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8. [link] It's a fantastic pro range zoom, I love the huge aperture. It's a tad heavy though...
I was just using 51 point. No tracking. I've only used tracking a few times ever, perhaps I should experiment with it more.
Thanks very much for your advice!

Ah ok. I have the 70-300mm vr it's not as pro quality as yours with the wider aperture but it's pretty good and has a longer range. I guess i'm not doing anything wrong then it's just take 400 shots of a flying/moving bird and hope a few are in focus .

Hahaha, definitely. It's so rare than any of my shots of birds in motion come out any good. I think however that a monopod could really help.

A monopod could work well. But before anything i'm gona get my macro lens. I find myself most of the time i'm out trying to go macro with my 70-300 which sometimes works well but I guess if i'm always trying for macros I should invest in a dedicated lens

Haha, I know the feeling. Before I got my macro I attached extension tubes to my 50mm f/1.8, but it never satisfied me. So I saved up and got my macro lens. I can't imagine life without it now.

Yeah i was thinking of looking into extension tubes but my 70-300 at full zoom is like f/5.4 i think and with extension tubes i'd need to use a slower shutter speed or something and i just don't think it would work. Hopefully before christmas i'll have the macro lens

Yeah, that was my main problem. But even then, once you get the macro lens, you're going to want a ring flash for even faster shutter speeds and greater DoF.

Do you have/use a ring flash? or any other flashes? i was thinking about getting one at sometime.

Nah, I don't have any flashes. I desperately want a ring flash though.

After getting my lens i'm going to have to look into getting a ring flash, I looked around a little and they seem to have a very nice lighting effect. Thanks for the tip!

Wow, very nice indeed! Although, I think it would be better if you left just a liiittle bit more free space around the seagull... the space filled with sea I mean...

Thank you! I might update it then later with a bit more free space.

I agree, such a nice shot!
I find it extremely hard to catch a photo of birds.. they always move too fast and fidget.. you got this perfectly; and while the bird was in flight. The angle is perfect to.

Thanks heaps! Yeah, this was like, 1 out of 20 I took that actually came out focussed on the bird and not the background.
