Rocks and Sand - Landscape StudyMedium : Digital Painting
Software : Gimp 2.6
A simple study of a mountainous landscape I did in prevision of a personal illustration. Though this one will take so much studies and preparation I won't really start it until several months I tried to simplify and abstract the rocks as much as possible, my aim wasn't to make a beautiful photo realistic finished illustration but only to understand several things about rocks hence the very rough rendering

This is what you meant by using more paintery brushes. This is gorgeous. It's not photo-realism, but presents realism in a beautiful abstraction.

omg! Can't wait to see the illustration!!! wow, several months of preparation, you have way more patience than me!! xD I'm really looking forward to it, it will be great I'm sure
I don't know if you like to use texture brushes. Here are 2 links of videos from the artist Jonas de Ro.

The mountains of this video are different from your mountains, but if you ever make a study about the different mountains, this may help you a little bit since he paints mountains suuuper fast.

This one is not a tutorial, but it shows a landscape during the day and night/ different weather. It's really interesting and cool.

Of course I won't be working solely on it, that would drive me crazy, but there are just so many things I still lack to do this painting...
Thanks a lot for the resources, the second one is really amazing, that's stunning o_o
About texture/custom brushes, I tend not to use them when learning, because I think I'm actually learning more by painting everything by hand. However this is very very slow and time consuming, and since I intend to become a professional one day, I would definitely benefit from learning faster techniques in order to gain time when doing finished work
