Description Excited to finally post my final for Light Grey Art Lab's  Animystics show , which opened last Friday! The topic was very personal, so this was a fun piece for me. Framed and signed prints are available here , if you’re interested. Part of the show proceeds go to animal rescues of the artists’ choice, so be sure to support and check out the rest of the show ! There’s a lot of great stuff.

Hi FancyTuna, I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you! I wrote a blog post here: awinans.tumblr.com/post/954959… where I talk a little bit about my process and my color inspiration. It's a bit vague, so just let me know if it doesn't answer your questions!

/)//7//(\ You're so fabulous omg. It was a bit vague but it does gather the jest of your process.
Still I'd like to know if you use editing effects and enhancements or is everything based off pure color experimentation, mixing and matching colors
no overlays, or multiply effects or anything like that.

Ah! That's a great question. The answer is...it depends? When I was a little less sure of what colors I wanted, I'd do one big overlay to get rid of local color, or to create a unified color scheme. Or, just to see what would happen and pull some colors I liked. Nowadays I'm better at eyeballing the colors I want, so it's more of a spot application method to save time with a "transparent wash".

If there're areas I want to be darker that I've already done the detail in I'll sometimes put a little multiply over, flatten, and work the color in. If there's a glowing area that isn't popping as much as I want to I might use color dodge or screen the same way. If I wanted a textured gradient in an area I'll also lay down the gradient down and work into it to create some visual interest. That sort of thing! If I'm really being fancy, I'll sometimes put a low saturation layer over an area and then do a rough mask so the brighter colors shows through in a kind of handmade way.

Does that make sense? I feel like it may be a very normal way of using photoshop effects, so sorry if it isn't very illuminating!

This was illuminating! I'm not really a Photoshop user other than photo editing and size adjustments
I stick to Sai for draw and coloring. But I feel as though I can take bits and pieces of your process and try to see
if it's compatible in Sai? (If that's okay) Lol. Ive watched a lot of digital painters and I thinks it's great that they all have their own method and process.
Some people combine masks and effects, and some refuse to use any effects. ;//v//; I'l really glad you took the time to explain you process. I'm grateful to you.

I've heard such good things about Sai! Of course feel free to use any part of my process you feel would suit your needs. Everything I've learned has come from my teachers, friends, and folks on the internet, so hopefully it's all a very pay-it-forward kind of situation. It's super interesting to me how folks work, because you're right...everyone is so unique, even using all the same techniques or brushes.

Good luck with stuff!

It's super cool!!! But...what is it? Is it a 2-headed jackalope? No offense intended, I love it!

Surely this is based on Watership Down? It's quite beautiful, quite eerie as well!

Definitely inspired by! I loved the book/movie as a kid, although I guess that's a bit disturbing in retrospect...

Thanks!

The textures here are simply excellent.  Combined with the colors, it creates a heavy storybook illustration sort of feel.  Good stuff.
