That's a Spiny Orb Weaver, Gasteracantha canceriformes, VERY common in the Southern US, and totally harmless to humans. This is a female; the males are about the size of the head of a pin.

Arachnids are a hobby of mine-have you seen my gallery, by any chance? I'm also an amateur naturalist with a Biology degree. I've worked with some well-known arachnologists participating in spider surveys of state and national parks. I really, really like spiders, in other words. If something is as commonplace as those little Spiny Orb Weavers are around here, it's ridiculous NOT to find out about them, even if you do not like spiders, just because there are so many.
