Description
Before StarCraft reigned supreme, we had Dune, C&C and C&C:Red Alert. This is a painting of the first GDI (Global Defense Initiative) mission from the classic real-time strategy game, Command and Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, developed by Westwood Studios. In the mission, the player commands a strike force with the objective of securing a beachhead from the sinister Brotherhood of Nod.
This one is made for the Video Game History Project by
I painted this based on my fond memories of the game as well as a series of different screenshots and videos, and so, as a result, I'm afraid it might not be 100% accurate.
This was a very fun, nostalgic picture to create and made me reflect how nice games we had back in '90s. I'm not opposed to Star Craft etc., but I did like these types of strategy games more, because they really focused on strategy (economics, positioning, army composition) instead of awarding micromanagement done in nanoseconds.

Oh my gosh, this put a thrill in my heart whose first distant origin.... I couldn't quite discern for a moment.
I don't think I ever played this game myself, but I sure enjoyed watching my brothers and my cousins play it.
Just so freaking nostalgic.

Nostalgia...I also prefer C&C series' aesthetic and storyline more anyway.

There’s some indescribable coziness about those old C&C-games.
My favorite was definitely RA2.

Yeah, I played a lot of RA2/Yuri's Revenge (especially the units and their wacky voice actors), but for me, my favorite was Tiberian Sun/Firestorm.

Those two were definitely my favorite ones in the series. ^^
But Tiberian Sun is definitely a favorite to me as well. I’ve spent so many hours on that game as well. xD

Yeah, and Tiberian Sun had the cool "destroyable ground" engine. With artillery pounding the ground, you could have a moat around your base.
I read somewhere that they removed the feature from RA2 due to how much processing power it required. I wish newer games would incorporate a similar feature.

That's a really awesome feature.
It's a real shame how it was removed from RA2. It would've been great to have.
And yes, I absolutely agree. It adds a fair bit of realism, and possibilities too.

Good job with the soldiers and that thing they are grouped around.

Thanks. That bulky thing is the Mobile Construction Vehicle - a huge building on wheels that opens up to a Construction Yard.

This certainly brings back fond memories.
(Not sure why you're pitting StarCraft against older RTS games though~ a sizeable portion of the modern RTS fanbase had their roots in C&C, et al. And it's true that micro is emphasized more- and it's the flashy split-second moments that capture the attention- but more often I've seen and experienced that whoever is macromanaging is still the one who wins. Like, you can micro your heart out and feel like a badass ...only to realize you haven't been spending your money/building your infrastructure and now your opponent is going to bulldoze you. I feel like that core principle is still safely intact. I dunno, one's mileage vs. another.)
Anyway, not to take away from your work, cuz I like it lots.

Yeah, I can certainly appreciate what you're writing, and I do agree to some extent. And as I said, I do appreciate StarCraft and feel that it's keeping the genre alive. Nonetheless, I still prefer the older games where it felt like you were commanding an army. The micro-emphasis, the limits to the amount of units you can build, every unit having their own hotkeys etc. are things that I don't like so much.
