Description

Night·mare

nītˌmer

noun

  • A frightening or unpleasant dream,

  • A terrifying or very unpleasant experience or prospect,

  • A person, thing, or situation that is very difficult to deal with.

  • Recently, I've been struggling with nearly back to back nightmares. All of which are vivid memories from my past, lots of loss, lots of pain, lots of fear. But one, from my childhood, has been reoccurring in all of them, where I am confronted with a monster unlike anything I could ever imagine.
It's head is a leathery skull with 6 beady black eyes. It's teeth are pointy, it has weird horns, a black feathered crest, and it's nose alone is about 20 times bigger than me. It's horrifying, to say the very least.
It was the first nightmare I ever remember having, I must have been about 5 years old, and I stayed up the entire night shaking and crying. Needless to say, my nightmares were always extremely vivid.
I stopped having constant nightmares when I was about 13, after things calmed down a little, but just recently, I started getting them again (Due to copious amounts of stress), and I wanted to put my visual idea to it.
So, this is my piece illustrating my confrontation with my recent nightmares. They're only scary because I'm seeing them through the eyes of a frightened child, and now as an adult, I can go into them, and remind myself that it can only hurt me if I let it.
Those nightmares that scare me are, at the end of the day, the same ones that have allowed me to be who I am so proud to be today. And really, they're not that scary once you approach them with love and an open ear.

They can be tamed, and they can be loved. They serve as a reminder that we are stronger than what we imagine, and that with time, everything can heal.

If you're struggling with any type of chronic nightmares/night terrors, I recommend putting a face to them, to understand why they're happening. Though this will not work for everyone, it did work for me, and it might help someone else.

Thank you guys for viewing, as always, and I hope you're enjoying the spring we've been so lucky to have so far!
