It's simple really. He did come to like her, though he never wanted to be bogged down in a committed relationship with her, like a lot of guys who want to experience the fruits of their youth they'd rather sleep around until later until their late 20's and settle down. Ataru is supposed to be the guy with the biggest flaw, which is being the most lecherous person on earth.

Being who he was, his pride was in the way of even treating her right or letting her be his girlfriend. The guy totally loves her but he is too embarrassed to admit it nor was he ready to commit. He did, in one of the movies preserve the future of them getting married because in the future of him having all the girls he wanted Lum would have left him. In his words "A Harem without Lum is like having a Beef Bowl without the beef!" Basically, it's no fun without Lum would have been his favorite girl anyway.

I always figured it was more a matter of maturity than anything else. He loves Lum, we all know it. He just was not mature enough to admit it openly yet. Classic fear of commitment.

To meet the love of your life-the person you simply can't live without, who you need more than anything in the world-is definitely more than a little intimidating, even moreso at a young age. That was at play with Ataru-even in the early seasons you could tell he knew Lum was THE ONE, but he wasn't ready to deal with it yet. You know that in the end they will have the perfect love together.

Pretty much what you're saying. She was the only one he actually loved for reals. It was implied several times that they'd get married and they'd be together forever. Even in the songs.

I also say Lum is kinda at a fault for imposing on him and his love life, therefor trying to force him into being comfortable with her from the beginning. It was the point, though. Lol. Towards the end it got a little annoying that he couldn't ease up a little, but he did at very small insignificant progressions.

In the early seasons I think they were still feeling the story and characters out. Ataru was a bit too much of a jerk to Lum, downright mean at times. And Lum was too jealous and too manipulative, a bit of a you-know-what at times. In later seasons they both were far more likeable and interacted better together.

Yeah Lum and Ataru both showed complete immaturity in the beginning. But in the end they developed at least a little bit more. I would have liked to see more developing changes throughout both these characters. I prefer watching the end of the series a little more than the latter, since it seems Ataru was a little more comfortable with dating Lum and Lum wasn't as quick to freak out on him as she did in the beginning. I still would have liked to see more change than that, lol. XD
