Description

Inktober day 27: Gecko feet, dorsal and ventral—the sci art x official prompt was physics x tread, so of course I instantly thought of these little peets.

Bite-sized science fact: Gecko feet are covered in tiny hairs (setae), each of which end in even smaller hairs (spatulae, which is an adorable term). All these tiny structures increase the surface area of the foot exponentially and allow it to be in incredibly close contact with the surface it’s on. The otherwise weak electromagnetic force (van der Waals) between the electrons of the spatulae and surface become collectively strong enough to support the gecko.

Thank you! <3 I was doing it as an Instagram ploy and wasn't sure if it was appropriate for dA but was frankly too lazy to take another photo—and folks said they didn't mind. Good to know it's enjoyed.
