Description
Science Fact Friday Week 2: Fungi!
Had to do a little pen & ink mushroom for class this week so fungi has been on my mind. Managed to finish it early enough to feature it here! I love stippling.

I love these things you do every week! I have a suggestion for you-Moss! :3

Oho I'm one step ahead on that one! c:
I'm currently finishing up a certificate in botanical illustration and my program requires a final project of our own design. I felt like bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, hornworts) were an underappreciated corner of botany so I submitted a proposal to do them!
It's still in the early stages but mosses will definitely appear at some point.

Ohh! Wow! I love moss, as far as underappreciated plants go that is. XD
Ohhh! So you study flora and fauna at college or uni then?
So do you know what week 4 will be?

Moss is so lovely. ;w; I grew up in a very dry place so I used to get so excited to see moss. (Granted, I still do...)
I've already graduated from uni, this is just a little program at a local botanical garden. c:
Not sure what week 4 is yet! I tend to wait until ~Wednesday and then go "what's interesting right now". At some point I want to explain photosynthesis, carbon sequestration, how to 'read' chemical structures, etc. - harder science topics. But I also love these lighter facts.

We have lots of moss where we live-my garden is full of some really pretty moss!
I even grew some apple trees by mistake! XD Hehe...
Ohh! Nice!
I thought everyone knew about Photosynthesis?Β
Is Carbon sequestration how the photosynthesis happens?Β

Haha how do you grow apple trees by mistake? "Oops I have an orchard now!"
I think everyone probably knows that photosynthesis is a thing, but I'd like to describe it in a little more depth. Carbon sequestration is the process by which different things (including trees) remove carbon from the air (carbon dioxide, for example).

Haha, that's basically what happened.
I mean, they're all dead now buuutttttt.....
I threw some seeds in the garden and BOOM!
I WAS TRYING NOT TO LET THEM GROW!
At the time I didn't know HOW to grow Apple seeds... But that happened anyway! XD
Ohh! That explains it!

@ apples: what are you doing
When I'm a real adult and have a house and a yard, I want to live somewhere where things just...grow like that. ;v

XD You mean indoors where it's warmer than South Africa because your nan gets cold easily? XD Sure!
Where I live, it's dangerous to put things outside until they're really big because of the shitty weather (which is how THEY died).

Ahhh gotcha lmao. Since I grew up in a desert I forget that sometimes places with rain and such are also inhospitable lol.

Haha, whereas I grew in...Basically an ocean but still understood that I would hate to 'live' in the desert.

Haha. It has its charm in some ways...but I don't intend to move back.
Warm ocean climate or cold ocean climate?

I suppose it might, it's because of where I live that this year. I finally realised we're never gonna have settled snow again so I prefer the Summer now, never used to.
COLD!

Mmmm that sounds so nice. It was 16 here today after being around 0 for weeks.
Also green. I want the trees to be green again. D:

Yeah!
Yesterday it was quite warm and sunny too!
Yeeesss! The buds on some trees are starting to flower but most aren't.

Good tidbit of knowledge there. If it weren't for fungi, life as we know it could not exist.

True fact! An underappreciated group of organisms.
(Not that I fully appreciate them either, though. I think mushrooms taste disgusting. Certainly cute and useful, though.)

You might not have had mushrooms when they've been cooked right. The white ones in supermarkets are pretty innocuous, flavor-wise. I like to saute them in butter. Every so often I'll eat 'em right out of the pan that way.

Nope, I've had proper mushrooms. My mom LOVES them and cooks them pretty regularly. I am not a fan.Β

Thanks! Yeah, I was feeling that style as I worked on it. c:Β
(Bonus: ink stippling is so much easier to clean up digitally than my usual work! I was amazed.)
