Description
A similar principle explains color-shifting mugs, spoons, and other items. Rather than using liquid crystals, they use leuco dyes. Leuco dyes also respond to heat by subtly moving molecules, but unlike liquid crystals they only have two forms (one where the color is visible, one where it isnβt). They are widely used because they are cheaper and easier to work with than liquid crystals.

Very cool - or warm! Β So the color effect is like oil on water? Β The spacing between the layers interfere and reinforces different colors due to wavelength interacting with the spacing? Β That would explain the look of them. Β Can you still get these?

Admittedly my physics knowledge is weak, but yes, I believe it's the same principle.
