About Daimons
Daimons are a loosely-defined type of immortal beings, unique in their ability to fragment their own souls. Descended from the chaotic tempests of the birth of the Aetherion, daimons tame their inner energy by instituting self-imposed laws and restrictions as they lay claim to special domains of power. A daimon's name is its source of power: while each has a formal title, they also have a secretive truename - a name known only to themselves. Daimons of higher classes can gift power to mortals by lending syllables of their names through ritual pacts and agreements. The syllable is then removed from the daimon's truename and lended to the patron, giving them a sliver of the patron's power over their domains.

Daimons can create others of their kind by removing aspects of their truename and using them to forge new life. The new life a daimon creates is always one class lower than itself. Daimon classes are Ascendants (ancestors born at the dawn of time, worshipped as gods), Sovereigns (the most active, powerful daimons who govern their own domains and make pacts), Chevaliers (agents, lieutenants, and envoys of the Sovereigns), and Retainers (lesser beings such as imps, fey, and other creatures with limited power who do the Sovereign's bidding). All daimons in the Aetheria Arcana series are Sovereigns if you'd like to use this lore.

Daimons are commonly called 'demons' but this suggests that all are evil - in fact, daimons represent all aspects of the world and can be aligned with good (Beneficai), neutrality (Nu), and evil (Maleficai). While most demons adhere to a strict code of lawfulness, some are known to go rogue - as chaos daimons - and become feared and hunted for their transgressions.

"I am the sorrowful chorus of silhouettes in the dusk. In these final hours of fading light, my children speak of the dead. Dark of feather and pale of eye, I wait in silence for those who come to me, bleary and tired, wishing to understand what lies beyond. I do not speak, for only the crows know."
