{Spoiler alert: if you have not seen the movie, The Mist, do not read the following paragraph}
Creeping up on the horizon slowly, fog filling into the blindsight of a Toyota Land Cruiser, with its headlights shining only so far. The engine shuttered and spat out it’s last dying fumes, before the vehicle came to a complete stop. Realizing what needed to be done, it was either the bullet in the gun to every passenger’s head, or the shattering demise led by jaws and teeth and talon and web, and whatever else lied foreign in the thick mist before them. One by one the bullets clicked into the chamber, and one by one, each head took a shot. There were only four bullets, but alas five lives to one. He screamed, knowing a father should never have to kill his own eight-year-old son, along with the three other passengers in the car that lay lifeless before him. He was alone, soon to be eaten, quick to be forgotten. He screamed some more, to whom, no one knows. He clicked the gun a few times in his mouth, knowing it wouldn’t do any good empty. What more could he do? Desperate to meet his son on the other side, he rolled down his window and cried out, hoping one of the monsters or aliens could hear him. He cried, and cried some more, until he heard low groans echoing the ground beneath him. The thick mist began to clear, gazing up to a red star. He was so entrapped in his own cries for help, for desperation, that he didn’t even bother to look up until now. A thick scaly fin, a thicker armored neck, the beast was bigger and cleaner than any of the rest. It’s head waved over to the front of the vehicle, only to admire it for a few seconds. Before the god slithered it’s face away into the mist. Minutes after the encounter, the mist cleared, and nothing but the monsters’ dead corpses remained, laid amongst the ground for miles. The mist... was over.
Quarantine has me cooped up, so during this blank time I decide to rewatch some of my favorite movies from my childhood/high school years. One of these movies was The Mist, based on the book written by Stephen King, later on remade into a TV Series that was sadly discontinued after its first season.
When rewatching the ending scene in the movie, when the five survivors are driving endlessly until they run out of gas, I had a vision of a “what if” and decided to try my luck with adding Zilla into the mix. With the eerie music and mysterious background, it just felt like it fit in my head anyway. It was also my first [real] attempt at a realistic oil painting style. Hopefully it turned out okay!
