Description I found this tree and thought i was onto something special, however after my visit last night i found it to be right underneath a very busy flight path and badly polluted from a lot of street lights....despite them being a good distance away!

Anyway, im a bit dissapointed with it, the tree is slightly green, about 5 exposures are missing hence the gap in the trails and cloud started forming towards the end of the night. When i have time i will redo the blend and hopefully improve on this.

Despite the streetlights I love the whole idea behind this. Speaking about streetlights I have a picture I took of some while driving down the road and it looks like lightning. It's in my gallery if you wanna see it.

the image is made up of around 25 images, each around 2 minutes long. Due to excessive noise issues on D-SLR's, leaving the shutter locked open for an hour and a half simply isn't possible. Instead so multiple images are taken and then stacked ontop of each other in photoshop.

check out Alex37, he has put together a great tutorial on it.

The stacking of 30 second photos is a good idea.. here is a guide. The first coment has a link to some good software I have tried... have another go.. I will

A program has been made that does all the work for you.

It's called StarTrails.exe.

It can be found here: [link]

Very beautiful. It's almost like a Catherine Wheel on bonfire night.

I'd love to do some of these one day.

this is awesome,
i really want to try it... except i kinda want to do film, b&w and then layer the negatives in the darkroom. how did you assemble the exposures in photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

allanibanez In reply to visionsandvoices [2008-03-05 21:14:04 +0000 UTC]

The only reason i take individual shots and then stack them is because after a few minutes of the shutter being open on a DSLR, you tend to get hot pixels. On a 35mm you dont have this problem so you don't need to worry about stacking negatives, you can leave the shutter open for as long as you like with no worries.

Take a look at Alex37 on here (he commented a few above you). He has put together a really indepth technique of stacking images of star trails in photoshop. In short though you put them on top of each other as seperate layers and set the layer value to "lighten" and all the star trails bleed through and show as one.

So 36 exposures, 2 minutes each, and what length of time between snapping the shutter?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

allanibanez In reply to DanSandy [2007-11-23 22:51:00 +0000 UTC]

its continuous shooting for the entire 1hr30mins or so.

This is one of the best star trails I have seen, very clean and a nicely lit subject, great job.

Pretty good effort, like the composition. Shame about the planes and the light. How did you light the tree? It looks like a 3d model or something.

allanibanez In reply to tobyedwards [2007-10-05 09:53:55 +0000 UTC]

i didnt end up lighting it at all, the light from the stree lights have done this. if they hadn't have been orange i think they have worked in my favour but nevermind. Just looked at my camera now, and it would appear that i had it set to be overexposed by 2 stops last night, i dont think this will have helped! balls.
