Description So I've had a few people ask me how I made Finny's pants, more specifically the plaid fabric the pants were made from. Since my Anchor tutorial seemed to be helpful I decided to do one for making plaid fabric as well.

Hope this helps someone! I'd love to know if it does so I know that the time making this was well spent. And again if anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I'll respond as soon as I can!

Good luck!

Edit - I forgot the put in the tutorial that you when you paint (kind of obvious so I didn't put it) it's just a thin layer enough to cover the fabric but still be able to see the weave under the layer.

No, no bias tape at all. You go and get like masking tape to mask out the areas you don't want painted then you paint the area left uncovered with the fabric paint. Once the paint is dry you can peel off the tape and then iron the paint to heat set it into the fabric so you can wash it like normal fabric. Does that help?

That helps A LOT. Thank you very much! I understand it completely now! You're like, THE ONLY tutorial on plaids I can find. I'm so happy.

Haha, I hope it does too. When I finish, I'll post a picture of it up for you because the only reason I would be able to make it was because of your tutorial.

I will! But question, what type of paint did you use to paint over the simply screen? And did you do it after you completed all of the lines using the simply screen or what?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AllFades In reply to DatAznKid [2011-09-25 21:36:14 +0000 UTC]

... um you only used simply screen fabric paint so you don't paint over it with anything. I don't think I quite understand your question. The only things involved in making this type of plaid is the fabric, masking tape, simply screen fabric paint, a brush, and an iron. Does that help? =o

Lol. Well I kinda looked back at the tutorial and read the edit part where it said you paint on the paint, and I'm like,"Wait a minute, what?" Plus, I'm using white and I let it dry for a day. And the white doesn't blend in a lot. Since the fabric I'm using is sort of a forest green color.

I have a question!! *hand shoots up* PICK ME!!

I am also doing a Finny cosplay (he's just so cute~) but I'm having a hard time deciding what to do for the shirt! Any ideas?

I just love what you did with the pants though!! THis is going to help me out a lot!!

Yea! for the red on the shirt I got some bias tape that matched the pants stripes and sewed it on the white shirt I had. It's not really hard to do there's lots of bias tape tutorials on here and the internet if you can't figure it out. I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions thanks so much for the comment!

Would this work somewhat the same on a pair of pre-made pants? I can't find the right plaid/tartan unless it's the complete wrong color. Blue plaid/tartan is hell to find! xDD

Like say, if I took a pair of blue pants and did this in black, would it come out looking okay, or should I do this, then try to make my own jeans out of fabric?

Thank you so much!

AllFades In reply to Lotha-Aterruce [2011-03-31 17:58:15 +0000 UTC]

I think it might depend on the fabric. Although it certainly wouldn't hurt to try! Are you trying to do jeans? If I were you I'd get a pair of old or cheapy jeans and try it on a small bit then see if it works as per the directions. If it does then bingo!

so THATS how your pants are so accurate. Good job! I just did this myself to a Maka Albarn skirt, but with ribbons. Dang, painting woulda been easier!

This is awesome, my friends and I are stuck trying to find the perfect plaid for a huge group harry potter cosplay. Doing this would take forever, especially for the amount of fabric we'd need for all of us, but at least I know there's a solution if we really can't find what we need. Great tutorial!

Good Lord I love Hobby Lobby. Great tutorial you have here, miss~ This will help me a lot. As someone else said though, I'll probably use it for everyday wear more than cosplay. Wonderful idea in the first place though-- I would've never thought of making my own plaid cloth if I couldn't find exactly what I wanted.

I'm not going to lie, I'm probably going to use this method to make some fun plaids to wear everyday too~ I kind of just stumbled across doing it! Thanks so much for commenting, it makes it worthwhile to make tutorials!
