Thank you! I'm new to this stuff, but starting to learn the ropes and get things I like out of the programs.

What programs do you use?

That one was done with Sterling. I'm playing with Apophysis, Sterling, Tierazone, all with mixed results. I've seen some beautiful stuff from others using Apophysis, but have yet to get anything I like out of it. Sterling2 lets me get something basic, and keep zooming deeper into it until I find a node I like.

Interesting! I've always been interested in doing these but I never tried. Is it hard to come up with the equations or do those programs work in a different way?

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't checked in for a while. All of the programs have starting points, and most have "random" functions to get started. Then you can start tweaking individual values either manually, or by adjusting shapes and sizes of objects that represent the formulas. After a while, you get a feel for what values affect the output, and how. I'm a rank beginner, just changing things up until I get something I like. There are folks that write the formulas from scratch and feed them into the rendering engine of their choice as a script...I'm no where close to that!

That's okay.
That sounds like a good feature to include for beginners. I'd probably mess around with the random functions for a while. That's sort of how I learned to make my own dA journal skins, though I stopped trying when I realized you have to have a paid membership to use them.... Haha. So far my only exposure to 3D modeling is with Blender, which I haven't even used in a number of years. One of those things I enjoyed learning and doing but I have so many things I'm always trying to work on that I don't have time for everything at the same time....
