Description Unfortunately, I was in my home office, behind a dirty window, with a screen!  I put out feeders a few weeks ago and a heated waters source (so it won't freeze).  Now I've just got to get out there when they're active!

Thanks.  I'm trying to figure out which tree to hang a feeder on that's positioned where I can get some outdoor shots.  Lighting/shadows are an issue since we're in the woods.

I have that problem, too. But the main thing is squirrels chasing all the birds away. I honestly didn't even know we had squirrels here because I've literally only seen them in the short time I had the bird feeder out.

I've got a family of three, living in the attic at the moment, that were raiding the feeders daily.  I took away the feeder that wasn't "squirrel proof" and spread a bunch of seed on the ground around the others that was laced with hot pepper oil.  The birds can't taste it, but the squirrels can.  That, with a few reminders with a pellet gun (non lethal so far) have discouraged them.  I'm seeing them less and less.  Shotgun is next, if needed.  If they weren't damaging the house, I'd let them be and probably feed them separately.  We've actually rescued and raised babies here, but they lived in the woods and didn't chew the eaves out of the house.

You know, I think I remember hearing that using chili oil is a good way to stop squirrels from eating the birdseed. Something about birds being incapable of tasting spiciness in general? I may try it when I put out the bird feeder again.

Speaking of things in the attic, I'm pretty sure there was something squirrel-sized running around in mine. The pest control guy put some traps up there so I guess we'll see if they catch anything.

I saw one of these near my house a few weeks ago but it flew away before I could get a photo. They are pretty rare in the part of Tennessee where I live.

They are protected here.  We're slowly restoring the property to Longleaf Pine which they like as habitat.  I hope to see more in coming years.  I don't know if it's the same bird, but I catch a glimpse of one a couple of times a week.  Since I moved back I put out feeders which is bringing all species in closer to the house.  I've got one designed for these guys that I'll be hanging in a tree I can "see" with the camera and hope for some better shots.  They're a pain when they start focusing on your house, but beautiful to look at, especially in flight.
