For my birthday this last November, my aunt got me the reissued model kits of King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Godzilla! I had a lot of fun putting them together and painting them! (Physically getting them was at the mercy of Big Bad Toy Store's stocking and USPS shipping, and they both made good time.)

---

Much like Rodan, Godzilla's a straight-forward stylization of one of the suit designs, this being the '62 suit (from KING KONG VS GODZILLA). Although, in a really abstract way - and maybe it's because of how I did the eyes - but it looks like a Godzilla from an alternate universe where Daiei (the studio behind Gamera and Daimajin) had made a Godzilla film. But it's a fun design nonetheless, and I love the energy in the pose (the sculpt even has folds in the skin to flow with the pose, so it has that looseness of the suits that give it weight and innately makes it feel more alive). One thing that makes this kit especially different from the Ghidorah and Rodan is that it's not a snap-together kit like they were. Not a problem, mind you, that only made it slightly more challenging.

As for painting, like all of the customs and kits I've done, I started off with a black primer (these paints blend and hold better on paint). I started off dry-brushing a blue base, and topped it off with a light green (it's a nice contrast with Rodan's purple/red and Ghidorah's orange/yellow). The fins (save for the main center row) were dusted with a light blue. The claws and teeth were done with a gloss orange, then gloss white. The mouth itself was a gloss red (with a little of that gloss orange to make the details pop a bit).

Unlike the previous two kits, I didn't use the color of the plastic for the eyes, which is a bluish green. I panted them yellow and smudged a little white onto them, giving them kind of a glowy effect, like there are lights to illuminate the eyes (again, akin to the Showa Gamera kaiju). I didn't bother with a little gleam effect, so he could retain an aimless, emotionless stare. And speaking of glowy, this set has optional glow-in-the-dark parts. I did build the glowy head, mostly as a bonus accessory, but the one piece I actively used were the fins, because when I'm given the option, of course I'm going glowy. They were painted like the rest of the body, only I didn't apply the light blue, since that would be the function of the glow.

The scenery was done much like the other two, with dark gray, tan, and light gray to give it a concrete-y look. I did paint some of the buildings different colors, such as the white building to Godzilla's left (I felt it was like the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco). The ones that have a brick pattern were painted red, and a couple others were painted blue. And like before, when all the parts were attached, I went over it with some more tan again to make it appear dusty. I was going to use the glowy nameplate, but I looked up some pics and saw some people had done a red/yellow gradient on theirs, so I opted to do that instead with the regular one.
