It's a few days late for Hedorah's 50th anniversary, but ironically quite early for Gigan's! For reals, this is meant to be for both monsters' 50th anniversaries.

The idea of Gigan teaming up with Godzilla was brought up to me on my previous Gigan piece , as both films did thematically address pollution, with the Nebulans' home planet being ravaged by it. I had given my own thought to the idea, and that's what led to this "prequel" to GODZILLA VS GIGAN. While it's never addressed that Hedorah took part in that planet's environmental destruction, it's not a stretch to speculate its involvement. Especially when you take Gigan himself into account - Godzilla ultimately defeats Hedorah by tearing it into smaller pieces, making it easier to dehydrate/kill. Well, Gigan's shtick is slicing and dicing, so perhaps he was specifically designed to chop smog monsters down to size?

However, the planet succumbed to the pollution, so I portrayed Gigan in a bit of a losing battle here. Gigan was good at treating the symptom, but he was never meant to treat the cause. The pollution persisted, Hedorah kept coming back, and the problem grew too big for even Gigan. Monsters fight monsters, not the means that create them.

(On a lighter note, there is a bit of fun to be had with this scenario, given that Ken Satsuma portrayed both monsters back in the day.)
