I know this is five years old, but thanks for explaining the Overlay layer in terms I could understand. I knew there was some algorithm to how it worked, but I didn't know the exact mechanism, and I Googled the subject to no avail.

Ah, starting digital art or starting SAI as a program? Sai is definitely a easy program to learn; it's simple and has some very helpful tools XD~

Nuuu >.> I'm a newb. I know how to use the Luminosity and Multiply...but the Overlay I haven't really tried. I still color/fill in everything by hand. So I haven't even tried going grey scale + overlay = pretty colors LOL
I'll definitely have to test it out ^.^

it looks hard.. but it's actually not... try to keep things close to the 128 grey though... or else things will get too dark or too light
