Description How many drawings in a storyboarded sequence? Well, here's one. Sequence, that is. At the end of Lilo and Stitch we were cataloging and packing up our story drawings. We got to talking about how thick the piles were. Eventually someone suggested we take a picture of the drawings for one sequence. We used the floor of a large open meeting room in the Florida studio, and brought in a scissor lift as a platform for the photographer. Then we spread out the drawings. We were all surprised just how large an area they covered. Bela Temesvary shot the picture. Then he suggested I sit in the middle of them for posterity.

Now, if you're still reading, bear in mind that this is not just one sequence from the film, but one VERSION of one sequence. Sharp-eyed observers will note that this is the obsolete chase sequence that featured a 747. That version was dropped after September 11. So this entire thing wasn't used. Nor is this the first version of this sequence - I boarded it at least once before this. So this is probably version 2. I boarded it again from scratch at least one more time after this one was scrapped.

Most people board on Cintiq now, but I still do it on paper. It's nice to have original drawings to sit on at the end.

As much as I covet the Cintiq, I have an undying love of paper. There's just nothing to compare with having that tangible piece of work in your hand (or, in this case, under your backside) as living proof of all your effort.

I gotta know. What happened to the drawings? Recycled, gifted or ebay?

Stored. They were moved to the Animation Research Library (I still call it the 'Morgue', but they try not to use that term anymore) just down the street from Dream Works. They have every drawing, painting, background and piece of concept art from every Disney feature ever made. In the old days the morgue was on the mail studio lot, and animators and others would check out (like from a library) classic scenes. If you were Don Bluth you never returned them, or took every key drawing out and then returned the scene. They put a stop to that practice years ago by requiring that all the art be reviewed in a room adjacent to the mail library. I used to check out the boxes of Mary Blair drawings and paintings. I'd look through them, and then put them all back for the next time.

wow. Just wow. Just to spend an hour there...

Of course, I'm imagining a huge building that's a cross between the Morgan Library and a blimp hanger full of decades of artwork.

Thanks for letting us know!

This is going to sound completely horrible (because i'm an aspiring animator) but, what do you mean "a storyboard sequence"? I've never heard that term before I know what a storyboard is but what consists of a storyboard sequence?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

alohalilo In reply to Sa-Zurri [2012-11-29 14:46:13 +0000 UTC]

Meaning just one sequence from the film. A scene. Like, a fight scene or an escape scene. The bit in Beauty and the Beast where they meet each other at the bottom of the stairs and then dance would be considered a sequence. Another easy way to find a sequence is to look for a song. "Part of your World" is a good example. The song Ariel sings is one sequence, and the discovery and destruction of her grotto is another sequence. DVD's usually break their chapters along sequence changes. I usually find that I interchange the word "sequence" or "scene". There are usually around 28 to 32 sequences in a feature. Three or four acts.

Ahhh okay, i kinda thought it would have been the different chapters on a DVD but didn't know how to word it. Also thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my question I hope you have a nice day/afternoon/evening!

absolutely breathtakingly amazing chris, i must say it is that dedication to your craft that has made you my favorite professional artist. i fell in love with L&S the first time i saw it in theaters, i even own multiple copies of it. (DVD/Blu-Ray/VHS) I'd also like to say thank you for doing all you did, you are my inspiration for my own career goal as an animator, and with that i am pleased to tell you that i am registered at the Art Institute of Wisconsin to start in January of next year. I hope that someday i can manage to create a story of my own that touches as many people as L&S has. Good luck with your future projects, i cannot wait to see what you come up with next!
