Malefor took advantage of Spyro’s feelings for Cynder when he kidnapped her shortly before that Night of Eternal Darkness. He used Cynder as bait to bring Spyro to the Well of Souls during the eclipse so he could corrupt him, and Spyro fell right into that trap. Then when Spyro and Cynder confronted Malefor he corrupted her again, and Spyro almost gave up immediately and nearly let the world be destroyed.

“Freaky Light” apparently has seen love be used to weaken others like Malefor did many times, she also believes that it tends to become a distraction that makes others lose their focus over time. She doesn’t fully deny that love can be a source of motivation, but she’d rather not rely on one that can backfire so easily. She also believed Malefor’s “hatred and revenge” motivation was more effective and decided to try it herself with the “Ren experiment”.
Ironically she herself also used love to manipulate others, most notably Ren. She plotted for Ren’s loved one (Sora) to die in front of him then offer him the chance to “be reunited with her” so he would agree to work for her.
