*Mike’s POV*

After what felt like an eternity, 12 hours had finally passed, and I was eager to go see the new kit in person. Preparing a dish of meat for Duchess, Brett suddenly interrupted me.
“Remember to cut it into small pieces,” he said, “so baby can have some too. Remember, helo kits go straight to solid foods, and after 12 hours our little kit will be hungry.”

I nodded, cutting the pieces of meat into smaller chunks.
“And mix this in there,” Brett added, sprinkling a white powdered substance over the meat. “It’s just a vitamin mix. It’ll help boost the little vixen’s immune system until she’s old enough for her vaccines. It’ll benefit mom as well.”
Mixing the powder into the meat, I nodded.
“That should be alright for now.” I said. “Plenty for both Duchess and her baby.”
Picking up the dish and turning towards the door, Brett stopped me again.
“Now remember,” he began, “that baby has never seen a human before, and is going to be frightened of you. As much as you want to get close to her, don’t follow her if she runs away from you.”
I nodded.
“And for the love of god,” he continued, “pay attention to Duchess. If she growls at you, move away. That kit is her highest priority, and if she becomes stressed, Duchess will defend her - and let me say she is not afraid to hurt you if she feels it necessary.”

I nodded slowly, letting the reality of it sink in. With a new kit to look after, Duchess’ maternal instincts overrode everything else, turning her almost feral in nature. And despite her close bond with me, I knew she may not even welcome me or let me see her baby. Deep down I hoped she would welcome me, but if she didn’t, I knew I’d have to respect her wishes and leave. I sighed, shaking my head.
“Well, it’s worth a shot.” I said. “Either way, they need their food, so I better go and take it to them.”
Brett nodded.
“I know this is your first kit and you are excited, but please heed my warnings.” He said. “I don’t wanna have to stitch your hand back together because you did something stupid and got bit!”
Slapping him playfully, I turned for the door.
“I’ll watch you through the video feed.” Brett said. “Good luck.”

Opening the door, I headed outside and started on the short walk to the hangar where Duchess and her new baby were. Arriving at the hangar door, I took a deep breath. This was it. I was finally going to see the new baby in person.

Slowly opening the door, I poked my head inside.
“Duchess?” I called quietly. Slowly stepping inside and closing the door behind me, I turned to look at Duchess. She looked up at me, purring happily. ‘That’s a good sign..’ I thought.
“How are you girl?” I asked, slowly approaching her. And there, resting on her other side, was the little vixen.
“Oh, she’s so beautiful..” I whispered. Placing the dish of meat on the ground, I took a step closer. The little vixen then opened her eyes, and on seeing me, immediately got up and started backing away, her tiny rotors folded behind her as she quivered with fear.
“Hello..” I whispered. The little vixen backed away some more.
“It’s alright sweetie, I won’t hurt you.”
Leaning into her mother’s side, the little vixen hissed at me, showing her tiny, needle-like teeth.
“You’re a spirited little fella, aren’t you?” I asked, stepping closer. Letting out a frightened squeal, the little kit darted around, hiding on Duchess’ other side.
“Gosh your so fast!” I whispered. I was always so amazed at how fast little kits were on the ground. This speed was essential for survival in the wild, as kits can’t fly until they’re almost a year old, so their only method of escape is to sprint, or ‘dart’ along the ground and find somewhere to hide.

Stepping over to Duchess’ other side, the little kit squealed again, huddling into her mother’s side. Not paying attention, I didn’t hear Duchess’ first warning growl. Seconds later, I was caught off guard when Duchess suddenly leapt up, growling and snapping her teeth at me. I leapt back, gasping in shock, before mentally kicking myself for not paying attention. I sighed.
“Sorry girl.” I whispered, stroking Duchess’ nose. “I just got a little carried away that’s all.”
Duchess lay back down, giving me another quiet growl, warning me to leave them alone. I sighed again.
“Alright girl.” I said softly. “I’ll leave you two alone now.”

Slowly turning and heading for the door, I smiled to myself. Sure, this first meeting could have ended better, but at least I was able to catch a glimpse of the little vixen. And now, as I walked back to the house, I started thinking of names for the new baby - and of all the names I thought of, one truly stuck with me.
