Description
SpluccatrossScientific name:
Height: 1 foot tall
Weight: a few pounds
Habitat: coastal cliffs
Native region: South America and Antarctica
Evolved from: white capped albatross
Lifespan: 15-19 years
- the spluccatross is a small seagull sized bird found in the Southern Hemisphere. They’re characterized by their bizarre defense mechanism. When threatened; they shoot out a nasty and poisonous liquid from their nose. Originally used to squirt out excess salt, their noses are now modified to shoot out the poisonous liquid as far as 20-25 meters. The spluccatross obtains it’s poison by the food it eats. Typically jellyfish and horned pufferbirbs.
- Spluccatross nest in huge rocky cliffs near the ocean. They’re monogamous and will mate with their partners for life. They take turns hunting for fish while the other watches the nest.
- They feed on fish, squid, and jellyfish. The spluccatross puts its beak in the water and skim through to catch something. Larger sea birds do hunt them. So they defend themselves by living in huge communal flocks and their poisonous liquid.
Horned Pufferbirb
Scientific family name:
Length: 30 cm to a meter
Habitat: shallow seas and reefs
Native region: worldwide
Evolved from: globefish
Lifespan: 5-9 years
- pufferbirbs are a type of fish descended from some type of globefish. They’re basically found all over the world’s oceans and are characterized by their beak like jaws and horn like protrusions on some species. They feed on crustaceans and use their strong jaws to crush and dismantle their food.
- Most species are highly poisonous. Possessing a type of neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin. Which causes paralysis and the shutting down of the respiratory system. Most animals that consume these fish die, however the spluccatross seems to be the only known animal that are not only immune to the neurotoxin, but even uses it as a defense weapon. As shown above, this horned pufferbirb was catch by a spluccatros.
