Description Basil had remained silent throughout Miss Abby’s narrative, but I noticed that as he listened, he grew more excited at the prospect of a new case. The keen look in his eyes betrayed the fact that he was elated at the chance to once again stimulate his mind with a challenge. He leaned forward in his chair, his elbows on his knees, fingers steepled together. “Your story is most engaging..."
--Excerpt from my upcoming fanfic, "The Case of the Emerald Ring."

Alright, another Great Mouse Detective drawing!

This is Basil of Baker Street talking with a client (those of you who know the movie may remember the girl at the end with the missing ring.) This is actually a scene from a fanfic I'm working on, which picks up where the movie left off. I gave her the name Abigale Lockhart, although most people will refer to her as Abby, and she has come to Basil concerning the mysterious disappearance of her emerald ring. I'm sorta stuck in a writers block right now...but I'm almost finished! This will be my first fanfic ever, so I'm really nervous about it. But if it turns out good, I have some other ideas, and I'm thinking about doing like a series like the Sherlock Holmes stories, told from Dr. Dawson's point of view. I know Basil is the star, but I think Dawson is sort of an under-appreciated character. But I didn't know where to put him in this scene, so I think this scene is going to be from his point of view.

But anyway, back to the pic. I bought some new markers the other day, so I've been playing around with them, and this is what came out. I'm happy with how the characters and fireplace turned out, but the rest, I'm not so sure. The floor turned out WAY darker than I meant for it to, and that back wall is ATROCIOUS! But I'm really excited about this, so I hope you all like it!

I think this is awesome! And I'm glad you think Dawson is underrated! And Watson too! Up until the newer Sherlock Holmes he's been portrayed as a bubbling half-wit! Ticks me off!

Aw thank you! Ugh since reading the original stories, I've always hated those bungling kind of versions of Watson too!

I always thought the movie was in DR. Dawson's P.O.V. because they start out with him as a narrator and then end the same way. Anyway, this sounds fun and when you get it done let me know and I'll ttly read.

Yeah, i thought it was too. I actually use a little bit of the dialogue from the end of the movie Thanks! It's almost finished, so hopefully I can get it on here soon!

Thanks!! Glad you like I think Basil turned out the best in this scene...I've drawn him so many times, it's getting a little easier to draw him in different poses. Actually, Basil is the only GMD character I've ever drawn, so I was anxious about drawing the girl...but she turned out much better than I thought she would

I second that Wow! I love all the details and that you can clearly make out Ratigan's portrait on the mantle. Basil's expression and body language really capture his interest in his new case XD.

ALS123 In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-09-09 17:04:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! That picture of Ratigan was harder than I thought it would be Yeah, I tried to make Basil look like he had an intense interest in the case. I don't want to give anything away, but in my story I was going to say that he had out of commission for a few days because of what Ratigan did to him on Big Ben, but he's so ready to get out of the house and get back to his work

Shinku-Ame In reply to ALS123 [2010-09-10 04:03:00 +0000 UTC]

You did do a great job, Basil does look intensely interested in his new case XD!

I'm really looking forward to reading your fanfiction! I'm glad that your mentioning his wounds from Big Ben since Disney had down played him being injured after the fight (no kids he's not hurt!). I would imagine that Basil would not want them to know how injured he was and that it wouldn't stop him from taking on more cases XD!

ALS123 In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-09-11 01:12:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank You! Yeah, i think there's no way he could have walked away from that unscathed. Every time i watch that scene, i flinch when Ratigan hits him, especially his back...and yeah, in my story, he says he's fine, but Dawson can tell he's still in pain, but Basil refuses to sit at home any longer.

Shinku-Ame In reply to ALS123 [2010-09-11 04:30:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah Ratigan clawing Basil's back had to hurt. I wonder why there aren't more fanart of him getting patched up after the Big Ben scene 'cuz that is obviously missing from the actual movie.

I saw a Holmes movie where he was injured and Watson used some very expensive (or a very good year?) alcoholic drink to clean the wound. Holmes was more concerned with Watson wasting the drink than sterilizing his wounds XD. But the next morning Holmes acts completely fine! Just thought it'd be fun to share XD!

ALS123 In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-09-13 17:27:21 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, that is so like Holmes! XD

I know, I'm surprised there isn't much fanart of that either. But, since I've always been disappointed that that was left out of the movie, I actually have an idea for a fanfic that describes his injuries and how long it took to recuperate and all. I started a little bit of it, but I'm also trying to finish this one about the emerald ring. I know, I need to quit working on two things at one time...I have a habit of starting something, and then I get an idea for something else and start working on it, and it just kinda snowballs If it turns out good, I may go ahead and do that too!

I guess since it actually takes place before the emerald ring case, I should put it on here first, that way its chronological. But I don't know

Shinku-Ame In reply to ALS123 [2010-09-13 18:08:04 +0000 UTC]

I really am glad your doing that kind of fanfic and I'm going to eventually get around to drawing some fanart of Basil after the Big Ben fight. I'm the same way with working on things XD! I'll also start something and come back to it months later. Talk about snowballing--I have a "List" of things/ideas to draw and I know its over 250! Its probably over 300 now but I so don't want to count.

I don't think that it would be a problem if you put the Emerald fanfic up first. It just depends on which one you feel like writing on any given day. You could always put up a little of each of them at the same time if you really want to. Either way I still look forward to them!

ALS123 In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-09-13 23:01:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh WOW! That's quite a list! XD I don't think mine's that long

Yeah, I thought about putting up a little bit of them at a time, like I think I'm going to split the emerald ring into about four parts. I think I'm finally done with the first part (WOO-HOO!) so I may put that on here in a little bit Yay! I'm glad everyone seems to be looking forward to it...I just hope I don't disappoint! I also look forward to seeing your pics too!

Shinku-Ame In reply to ALS123 [2010-09-14 04:41:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I have a huge "List," I must be nuts to think that I'll ever finish it! I'm glad that other people are looking forward to your fic. I don't think that you can disappoint anyone really since writing something is always better than nothing. I really look forward to drawing a disheveled and injured Basil soon XD!

Brinatello [2010-09-08 02:46:26 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's a incredible scene you've created here! It reminds me of the same angle I drew for "A Long Yarn" with Basil and Dawson talking in their own chairs. To tell you the truth, markers are my enemy only because their tones are far too dark for my liking. I've ruined coloring books with them, too. I turned to color pencils when doing traditional coloring. I can then go as light or dark as I desire.

Other than the markers, I really like this scene you've drawn. It's very detailed. I feel like I'm standing in Basil's sitting room, also listening to her story. Are you going to submit the story here or FF.net? I'm curious to read it once it's ready to go. I know, Dawson needs lots of lovin' when Basil is the star.

ALS123 In reply to Brinatello [2010-09-09 16:59:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks you! I sorta wish I had of used colored pencils instead. I made the floor WAY too dark, but it was already too late to fix it once I started coloring it I just bought this pack of like 100 markers, and i was excited because it came with such a wide variety of colors. But I'm still getting used to them

I'm glad you like it! Yeah, I'm a stickler for details...that's sorta why my fanfic is taking so long to finish I'll probably just put it here on deviantart because I don't have an account on FF.net. I really hope it turns out good, but I'm nervous because I've never written a fanfic before I'm trying to stick to the characters personalities, and also use correct grammar and things, since i'm telling it from Dawson's viewpoint. And I don't think much is known about the girl at the end...I didn't think she had a name, so I gave her one I'm also worried that it's not gonna make sense...I'm having a hard time trying to explain things. But I'm really excited about it, and I hope it turns out good!!!

Brinatello In reply to ALS123 [2010-09-09 21:05:12 +0000 UTC]

One bit of advice with markers I could give, try to color in a single stroke, no overlapping. It'll cause lines, but the single stroke is not as dark. It's almost like coloring with paint but not as wet. Exactly was the same way when I got my markers. I was excited and used them for my coloring books. Wasn't a pretty sight.

Have you considered a beta reader? They've very good to have. They can spot grammatical errors or alter sentences to sound more clear. I highly recommend getting one for your story.

ALS123 In reply to Brinatello [2010-09-10 01:22:51 +0000 UTC]

thanks for the advice. That was a big problem i had with these markers...it kept leaving streaks behind, and when i tried to fix it, it just ended up looking worse.

I'll have to look into the beta reader thing. It sounds like it'd very useful. When it comes to grammar, I need all the help I can get.

I often joked about using markers in coloring books, so wet and awful. I'd go, "We got a bleeder!" Markers are great for posters and thicker paper methinks.

Same here with needing all the help I can get! Yesh! I got an A+ in grammar, but that was also a billion years ago...okay the seventh grade in 1991, but still!

ALS123 In reply to Brinatello [2010-09-11 01:06:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I kept checking the back of the paper thinking it was gonna bleed thru, and although i did use thicker paper, i was still surprised that it didn't bleed thru.

I also got an A in grammar, but I also live in NC, so I'm a southern girl with a big southern accent, and I'm not really used to talkin properly That's why it's been so hard to write from Dawson's point of view. But I read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories ALOT, so I'm trying learn some from that. I've been told that I read too much Sherlock Holmes, but I just can't get enough...although Doyle's was the best, in my opinion
