This has been stuck in my head for a long time since the ending of Mario Oddesy. Here's how I imagine it. After Peach rejected both Mario and Bowser, she immediately gives up on love, and Mario returns to New Donk City feeling depressed. Later Mayor Pauline found Mario feeling depressed, so she sat next to him, Mario told her everything about after he defeated Bowser on the moon, Pauline gave Mario some advice that perhaps Peach is not the type of person to fall in love with, and Mario has to move on, and keep her as a friend. Mario smiled and thanked Pauline for her advice, and Pauline if sometime if he's ready if she can take him out to dinner? Mario agrees.
