Oh, simpler than you think. It's like, there are real people who've formed the band (In this case Jamie Hewlett, Damon Albarn, and respectively Cass Brown) and they come up with cartoon characters to act as 'the real band'. So while the live people do all the singing and promoting- they pretend that it's actually the cartoons doing it
