“And that’s last one,” Poly said as she turned the datapad off. “We better head back to the enclave.”

Gordon nodded in agreement, but before they could leave, a voice said, “Well, well, well. Look who it is.” Both of them turned, their eyes filled with fear. Behind them floated Concussion, a smirk across his face. “I knew you weren’t dead, especially since I didn’t find your body in the ruins of Stranger Industries,” he said to Poly. Gordon moved in front of her and grew larger with anger. Concussion turned him attention to him and said, “And of course, if you weren’t there, then your puppy-like protector wouldn’t be there either.”

“You don’t have to do this, David….” Poly began but was cut off.

“Really, Paulina. You’re playing that card? After everything you know that I did, you know that there’s nothing of David left. Stop embarrassing yourself.”

Poly looked away as Gordon clenched his fists and said, “What do you want?”

“Entertainment,” Concussion said with a nasty smile. “I’m going to kill one of you and I’ll let the other live in peace for the rest of their life. The hook is, you decide who I will kill.”

Poly and Gordon looked at each other for a moment, and then Gordon said, “It’ll be me.”

“Gordon, no!” Poly interjected. “You need to stay so you can protect the enclave.” She looked over at Concussion. “Chose me.”

“No!” Gordon cried. “They need your knowledge more than my strength. I should be the one he kills.”

“No,” Poly said softly. She reached up and rubbed his cheek. “I couldn’t go on without you. It’s better this way. Trust me.”

“You’re wrong,” Gordon replied, tears welling up in his eyes. “You’re the source of my strength. If you weren’t here, I’d be nothing.”

The arguement continued, and as Concussion watched, he grew unhappier. Although this was going that way he expected it to, he wasn’t getting the enjoyment he had expected to get from it. In fact, as they continued, he grew more agitated. Finally, he couldn’t take it any longer and shouted out, “ENOUGH!” Poly and Gordon instantly stopped their discussion and turned to face him, their hands instinctively grasping each other’s’. “You two are pathetic. I had forgotten that. I can’t think of anything worse than leaving the two of you together. I mean, it’s not like either one of you are a threat to me. You can go back to whatever pitiful existence you may have and I’ll ignore you like the ants you are.” And with that Concussion turned and flew away. Poly and Gordon looked at each other, confused by what just happened.

They weren`t the only ones. As he flew away from them, the thoughts of what just happened turned around in Concussion`s mind. He didn`t understand why he let them go. It wasn`t like him to show mercy. And it certainly couldn`t be because they had been his friends.

He suddenly stopped, disturbed at what he just thought. No, they hadn`t been his friends, they were David`s. Why did he think that? David was dead, he shouldn’t be thinking that. He tried to put the thought out of his mind, but kept going back to it. Distracted as he was, he didn’t foresee what happened next.
