“Okay, Fuck, Marry, and Kill: Johnny Depp, Michael Cera, and Brad Pitt.” Tosi grinned at the girl who was lying on the bed next to her, waiting for Marissa’s response. It was Rissa’s day off, and the girls had planned to do something exciting with some other friends, but Thunder and Ari were both sick, so Marissa and Tosi were on their own today. The two friends had been bored, sitting up in Tosi’s room with nothing to do, so naturally, they’d started playing the “Fuck, Marry, Kill” game to pass the time (and besides, it was funny).“Oh, god, um,” began Marissa, staring up at the ceiling intently while she played with her own hair. “Let’s see: definitely marry Johnny Depp, because then I get to have sex with him ALL the time, fuck Brad Pitt because, I mean, why the hell not, and kill Michael Cera because that’s the only one left.”
“Haaaarsh,” laughed Tosi, grinning at her. “Poor Michael Cera, he’s like an awkward little kid!”
“Yeah, well, that’s exactly why having sex with him would be weirder,” Marissa countered, chuckling as Tosi laughed.
“Wish I could shift into celebrities,” sighed Tosi with a smirk as she nudged her companion’s side. “I’d turn into Michael Cera and guilt you for killing me.”
“Why don’t you do something useful with that power of yours and turn into Johnny Depp so I can have sex with you?” Marissa replied, grinning even past the inward horror she immediately began to feel. Oh god. That had been going too far. Tosi was going to think that was weird. Or worse, she’d figure it out. Oh shit. Why didn’t she think before she said these things? Marissa, you can’t just say stuff like that to the girl you like.
But Tosi laughed, seemingly not picking up on the feeling behind the sentiment. “Well, I’d have to meet him in person first to be able to shift into him, and believe me, if I met Johnny Depp in person, I’d be having sex with him.” The two giggled like teenagers before Tosi turned to her friend, rolling onto her side and propping her head up. “All right, your turn to think of some.”
“Aaaaaall right.” Marissa hummed as she rifled through people in her mind, trying to think of a slew of unique, difficult-to-choose-from people. Finally, she got the perfect idea. “Okay,” she said with a grin as she rolled to face Tosi on her side, “I’ve got the best one ever.” She was actually quite pleased with herself on this one, and it showed; her eyes glittered with mischief.
“Bring it.”
“Fuck, Marry, Kill: Will, Mayday, and Lily.”
“Oooooh, gross!” shrieked Tosi as she began cackling. “Why would you do that to me, Riss?” She threw a pillow at her friend’s face, the both of them in a roaring fit of laughter before it died down enough for them to talk again.
“No, really, c’mon,” urged Marissa, grinning. “You’ve gotta do it.”
“Fine, fine, God,” huffed Tosi, smiling as she lay on her back to stare at the ceiling. “Lord, how am I supposed to do that one…Okay, well I’d kill Mayday ‘cause he can be an annoying little fucker…”
“Understandable.”
“Then I’d fuck Will, I guess, since he is kinda hot…and marry Lily, since she’s the only one out of those three who wouldn’t drive me utterly insane over a long period of time.” Satisfied, Tosi folded her arms behind her head. “Besides, she’s pretty cute too.”
Marissa felt her heart stop in her chest as she looked over at Tosi. “…Didn’t know you swung that way,” she said cautiously, daring to let herself hope.
“A little.” Tosi shrugged. “Never dated a girl before, though.”
Marissa spent the next few minutes trying to calm the raging party of relief, excitement, and hope that was swirling through her from her head to the pit of her stomach. She had a chance! A very, very small chance, but goddamnit, it was there. There was the nagging worry about the fact that she’d said another girl was cute, of course, but Marissa pushed that aside in lieu of the excitement that came from knowing she could potentially have what she wanted so badly.
“You seem surprised,” came Tosi’s voice, knocking Marissa out of her reverie.
“A little,” she admitted.
“Well,” Tosi explained, “look at it this way: with my power, I can change gender at will along with appearance, right? So I’ve pretty much learned that gender isn’t a big deal when it comes to the way a person behaves.” She shrugged nonchalantly. “And I mean, both genders have their flaws, so why not try both on for size?”
“…That’s a really good way to put it, actually,” said Marissa thoughtfully. “Never thought to explain it that way.”
There was a pause. “That almost makes it sound like you swing that way.” Tosi raised an eyebrow at her companion, who suddenly looked slightly uncomfortable.
“Er, well, yeah. I do.”
Tosi looked rather surprised. “Huh. Never woulda guessed.” Marissa was sure she saw a smile on her friend’s face as she laid back.
“Well,” Marissa said, “I just…I dunno, I like girls, I guess. That’s the long and short of it, I don’t have a big fancy explanation. Never really wanted to date a guy, either.”
“Hey, you don’t always need a reason for who you like. Do straight people need to explain themselves?” Answering her own question, she continued, “Nope.”
Marissa paused, then gave a slow nod. “Good point.”
“So,” Tosi continued, switching gears as she rolled onto her side and smirked at Marissa, “got anyone you’re crushing on?”
“Oh God, what are you, thirteen?” snorted Marissa, laughing as Tosi poked her in the side with a frown.
“Come ooon, I’m curious,” she insisted. “Tell me!”
“You first,” insisted Marissa, trying to slap away Tosi’s hands with a smile.
“Oh, no way.”
“Well then, I’m not telling you anything,” Marissa retorted, grinning at her friend.
“Can I guess?” pleaded Tosi, dying to know what went on in her companion’s head.
“…All right, you can try,” Marissa allowed begrudgingly.
“Okay, so they’re in the Tower, right?”
“Yep.”
Tosi, looking thoughtful, sat back next to her friend, legs crossed. “All right.” Concentrating, she shifted her face to a paler skin tone, hair turning black and eyes going milky blue-white. “Lily?” she guessed, taking on the blind hero’s voice.
“Nope.”
“Hm.” This time, Tosi shifted into the freckly fire-powered Ari, hair lightening a tad from Lily’s shade.
“Not her either.”
Next, Tosi’s skin darkened, and her hair darkened once again and fluffed out from her head. “Thunder?” she guessed, trying to imitate the girl’s accent.
Marissa chuckled. “No, I’m pretty sure her boyfriend would kill me.”
“Well, Will would kill you just as quick if you had been crushing on Lily,” Tosi pointed out.
“Touché. Well, either way, none of those.”
“Are you lying to me?” Tosi asked suspiciously, shifting back to her original brown-haired appearance. “You have to tell me if I guess it, you know.”
“I know,” Marissa said with a grin. “You haven’t guessed it yet.”
Tosi then shifted into various other girls, from Sarah to Maggie to Marie, and all were rejected by a bemused Marissa, which frustrated Tosi to no end.
“Come oooon, you said they were at the Tower, right?” whined Tosi.
“Yeah.”
“Well then, who is it?” she demanded. “Am I forgetting someone?”
“Okay, okay, okay, I’ll have mercy on you,” said Marissa, smirking even as her heartbeat quickened. “She was the first one.”
Tosi looked bewildered. “Lily? You said it wasn’t her, you liar!”
“No, before that.”
“What?”
Marissa steeled herself for one of the biggest confessions she’d ever made. “The face you had before Lily.”
“She was the first one I guessed! There was no face before Lily’s.”
“There was yours.”
A silence descended upon the two, both staring into each other’s eyes—green-eyed Tosi with shock and brown-eyed Marissa with hope and steadiness. As terrifying as this was, this waiting for a response, this not knowing, it felt better than anything Marissa had ever said to conceal it before. She felt like even if she was rejected, she’d feel a lot less burdened with these feelings afterward.
“…Me?”
“You.”
“…You’re not shitting around with me?”
“Nope.” Marissa’s hopes were growing stronger and stronger with every passing moment.
Another long silence passed between the two, both of them just staring, but now Marissa had a faint smile on her face.
Tosi’s shout seemed to startle the both of them. “Fucking YES!” she crowed, pumping a fist into the air with a massive grin. Marissa started laughing along with her companion, the both of them collapsing into a pile of giggles prompted by indescribable happiness. “Holy shit,” gasped Tosi with a grin, elatedly pouncing on Marissa while the two continued laughing.
“I’ll take that as a yes, then?”
“Fuck yeah.”
Their kiss was punctuated by smiles.
