Why stick a watermark on it? Crazy - like scrawling out every third word of a published poem ... desecration ... pointlessness ...

It's so no one can steal it and use it as their own. If they cry and copy and paste it the watermark will show up and they will get caught. Wouldn't you be pissed if someone used your great idea for themselves.

Well, not so pissed off that I'd want to spoil the original artwork, no. I mean, in that case, what's the point? The artwork is intended as a form of expression, a means of communication - and sticking a watermark on it obscures that intent and interferes with the communicated message. That's how I see it. Your photo is great - but sticking DA Deviant Art all over it really gets in the way ...
