Description
Hobbit Head Canon #382 - From a very young age, Frerin was always the best at cheering Thorin up. (Head Canon #381 is that Thorin was a rather moody child and adolescent, maybe because his whole damn family is obsessed with gold and shit. "God grandpa, could you not act like such a weirdo in front of the elves? They already make fun of me as it is." So embarrassing.)Shit I made myself sad drawing this. Poor Frerin. Poor Thorin. Poor everybody.

I was about to say "This made YOU sad? What about the unsuspecting viewer?!?!" But then I realised drawing it would be much sadder...since you'd have to be there for every line and every colour. So yes, I can imagine this was quite emotional, all things considered.
I am very blown away by this. The storytelling in the poses is amazing. It's so simple too! You haven't gone crazy and added a dozen unnecessary panels, it's just two panels but it says so much.
Just when I think I'm getting the hang of pacing and panel usage...you go and do this.
The transition in Thorin is awesome. He's switch from broody to calm is so well done. The way his arms and legs extend outward as he relaxes...GAH! so good I could ramble on for hours about it, but that would probably just make for an awkward comment. Equally, Frerin's transition is completely adorable. You can see in his face, in the first panel, that he's thinking 'Thorin needs to be cheered up'...and then that extending of the teddy (ram thing)...just...just...
It's very sad knowing the future but as an isolated moment it's completely lovely and sweet.

It diiiiid make me sad! It was right after I saw BotFA for the first time too, and I had triple sadness already!
Sadness the First: BofTA deaths; despite poor/lack of character development for certain characters, their deaths still bummed me the fuck out.
Sadness the Second: Nostalgia factor - that was our last visit to Peter Jackson's Middle Earth.
Sadness the Third: Frustration at the total ditching of the dwarves by the third movie...that was such a bummer, and so frustrating. I just wanted to see the fricking characters that I'd already invested in during the first two movies, not some Wormtongue ripoff running around in a dress in what I assume was meant to be the 'comedic relief' role. I thought that was what James Nesbitt was for in the first two...c'mon PJ!! COME ONE!
Ahem, but I digress. XD The nice thing about being mildly able to draw shit is you can fill in the gaps and do some fan-style character development for the poor neglected characters. Actually I think that's why I like drawing Frerin & Dis so much. They weren't in the movies (or the books for that matter haha) so I can't be disappointed in their portrayal...I can just tramp around in the open playground that is "no official story for them so I shall make shit up!" And be merry.
Ah thanks so much! I actually thought a /lot/ about Thorin's transition/body language, so I'm really glad it came through.
"It's very sad knowing the future but as an isolated moment it's completely lovely and sweet." That's a really nice way of thinking about it. I mean...really, when you think about it, all characters die at some point. So every character's (and person I suppose) story is going to end at least a little sad. Good to focus on the happy moments that lead up to the end. That's really all you can do I guess.
