Description Poor Gwindor gets so little attention in the fandom. Is it because we are so shallow that we only love our elves young and beautiful?

In a universe of tragic stories, his is exceptionally painful. He sees his brother mutilated before his eyes. He goes crazy and charges the enemy, in so doing setting off the cataclysmic events of the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. He gets captured and enthralled for 14 years. By the time he escapes he is marred in both body and spirit, looking like "the aged among mortal men". Then, in a culture where lovers are singlemindedly devoted to each other for all time, Gwindor's fiancee falls in love with the mortal whom Gwindor has rescued and brought back to Nargothrond. To cap it all, the mortal gives the king disastrous advice, and everyone ignores Gwindor's protests that they are heading to disaster, and consequently the city gets destroyed and Gwindor is killed.

And yet, faced with the loss of everything he ever held dear and the rejection of everyone he ever loved, the heartbreaking, the awesomeΒ thing about Gwindor is that he continues to love both the girl who rejected him and the man who supplanted him. He releases Finduilas from her betrothal to himself, tells her "go whither love leads you", and with his last breath tells Turin he loves him, then urges Turin to save his girl.Β

Gwindor deserves more love.

Gwindor is my absolute favorite after Maeglin!!! He has everything taken away from him and his lover falls for TΓΊrin, but he stays good and true in spite of all of it... I love him to bits and he and Finduilas better heckin be living happily ever after in Valinor right now or I will lose my shit.Β

That's exactly the reasons I love him too!! And yes, I absolutely will NOT accept any other outcome than their having their happily ever after in Aman!

Still muttering darkly about TΓΊrin. The guy's bad news, I tell you. Gwindor, on the other hand, is basically a decent, unselfish person. (hint - TΓΊrin really isn't)
I agree Gwindor deserves more love. Your dual before/after version of him is lovely in both aspects, I think. The after face has so much character, and he has this air of wisdom.

Oh, I'll be the first to join you in muttering darkly about Turin!! I tried to rationalize that I CANNOT blame him for being cursed, but the fact is I dislike his character and his decisions as much as the outcome of his actions. I can appreciate that others are sympathetic to Turin (I do love some beautiful, moving artwork I've seen) but I have never been able to like him.Β
Thanks for loving both faces of my Gwindor. Not many people can appreciate the "after".

Beautiful job on this, I like the 'before' and 'after' his time in captivity. So sad to what happen Gwindor...Β

It is... sadder than Maedhros because Maedhros came through with his beauty, strength and the fire of his spirit intact. Poor Gwindor is a shadow of his former self...

Actually, Finduilas didn't reject him - he broke off their engagement because he felt unworthy of her. I did a doll on him, and found a way to make it look like he only has one hand. Was a bit tricky ^^

Reject in the sense that her heart turned away from him to Turin; she didn't love him any more, and she sought Turin's company all the time. She didn't need to say anything to Gwindor. Believe me, that's something a person can feel at once and very deeply as rejection. When he spoke to her, he was doing the decent thing by addressing the situation and setting her free. Yes, he DID say he was unworthy of her, but that whole conversation came about only because it was painfully obvious she was out of love with him.Β
A one-handed Gwindor doll would be unbelievably sad!!!

Hm... I'd have to re-read that part once I get back home.

Why would that be sad? I'm a bit confused here ^^

[how did I write "her heart turned...to Beleg" in my earlier comment? I've just fixed it.]

It's in the Narn i Hin Hurin that Gwindor and Finduilas' emotions are clearest, but it was evident in Silm too.Β

Gwindor is a tragic character, so any art of Gwindor is sad... but a crippled doll is even more so to me perhaps because I associate dolls with childhood and innocence and those I once had were either pretty or cute... not a grieving, aged Noldo with one hand.Β

I was wondering about that, too ^^

I have these two and the Unfinished Tales, so I might just check all three ^^

I see that you are not familiar with dolling - not to worry, I didn't chop off the hand of any poor doll. Take a look at my gallery to see what it is that I do ^^

Oh I see! Β You mean the online dollmakers like Azalea's dolls! Dollmaking is a traditional craft so I was thinking of cloth dolls with stuffing... yes, I agree that an Azalea's dolls Gwindor wouldn't look sad.Β

Turin really is a habringer of bad luck...

alystraea In reply to Nelyasun [2017-11-13 09:34:17 +0000 UTC]

Maybe I shouldn't blame him because he is cursed, but I still hold Beleg and Gwindor's deaths against him.

Nelyasun In reply to alystraea [2017-11-13 09:41:44 +0000 UTC]

same here. And even if he is cursed, it is not a fully acceptable excuse for some of his more questionable actions...a stone bridge right at a place where a hidden kingdom needs to stay hidden and takes too long to destroy at the sight of enemies arriving? Not the smartest suggestion to giveΒ
