Description
This Red-backed Mousebird, Colius castanotus is part of a genus consisting of animals with extraordinary perching abilities. Mousebirds' feet are unique: their two outermost toes are reversible, so they may point either forwards (with the other two, for hanging) or backwards (for grasping). Their name refers to another of their curious characteristics: they can run like rodents. They live in groups, mainly in Africa, and feed on buds, leaves and fruits.Artis Zoo, Amsterdam, Holland.
