The art of storing magic spells into different storage mediums is not a common feature in The Ever-Changing City of Sargasso . The first form of this art was the skill of storing spells on audio cassettes that can be cast by playing the cassette on something like a tape recorder. Though this does have the drawback of the spell actually being cancelled out by a loud enough noise due to the recited formula on the tape being covered up by the noise. And the fact that playing a Spell on Tape long enough will cause that tape to burn out.

Though a new form of "Contained Spells" that started to appear in The City is Spells-On-Disks or as they are known commonly, "Caster Disks." Which are vintage floppy disks & other obsolete storage disks that are able to contain one type of spell, as most spells can take up the space to fill just one 3 1/2 inch disk. While most spells can just fill one standard size disk, more powerful spells have to be stored on a larger Zip Drive since they have more room. As trying to contain these spells in pieces on multiple 3 1/2 inch disks is problematic and each piece can be easily misplaced.

Standard Caster Disks can be activated by inserting the disk on a device that has a floppy disk drive, and depending on the machine, can be activated with either a simple button press or with more advanced spells like ones found on a larger Zip Drive, typing the proper activation code on the keyboard.

The types of spells one can find on Caster Disks are usually categorized as such: Offensive, Defensive & Passive. Though some spells that are in these categories aren't your standard magic missiles, fireballs and thunderbolts. Some spells can be attacks from more monstrous enemies like shooting spiderwebs, the breath attack of a certain breed of dragon or even summoning a massive paw of a great beast that swipes at a target.

One of the other types of Caster Disks that can be found or made are Summoning Disks. These Caster Disks contain a creature that has been bound to the disk and can be called forth by the summoner to aid them in some way. However these specific disks can be used as mini-jail cells to store targets that the caster want to imprisoned as a blank Summoning Disk can be filled using a specifically made device that can store living creatures on the disk. Though these device are hard to find, much less create and unfortunately The Ever-Changing City's Penal Colony doesn't have access to such a device.

There are other ways of using Caster Disks besides standard spell casting. With the proper set-up, one can actually use the spells on these disks to empower certain devices with their power. There are certain designs of Cast-Off Modular Armor that are equipped with a floppy disk drive which allows the wearer to empower the armor with certain effects like a barrier around the body or allowing the suit bearer the power of flight. Some weapons can be equipped with a floppy drive so that they too can gain certain effects like if a Caster Disk that contains a fire-related spell is installed, the weapon becomes imbued with a fiery aura and can burn their targets upon impact. In fact there are certain Caster Disks specifically designed to be used with such devices.

While these disks can be useful, it's always a good policy to actually check if a disk is safe before actually using it, as some spells can be either a dud at best or worse, be essentially magical malware and can infect whatever they are installed in with a virus that will crash the device or even corrupt the spell on the disk so that it's about as safe as handling hazardous material with your bare hands."---)

I was inspired to make this after watching some Doom Eternal gameplay. Specifically after seeing the collectable floppy disks you can find that function as actual cheat codes. So I decided to take my old concept of Spells-On-Tape and expand that to make my own set of magic floppy disks by taking inspiration from Doom Eternal's Cheat Codes, Outlaw Star's Caster Gun and Shells, and some of Final Fantasy 8's Junction System.

Plus I have a fondness for vintage technology like Floppys, Cassettes, CRT Monitors. and the like since I did actually use such things when I was a kid in the 90s. That and my love for antiques in general since I like learning about the story behind them. You can find more information about some vintage technology by going on channels like The 8-Bit Guy &Β  LGR .

I've left the disk you see above blank so as to give you guys a good template to design your own floppy.

Like some of the other artifacts I've made, I'll leave links to four lists of them that you can look at. And all of them I put in the public domain for you guys to use under Creative Commons 0. In fact you could probably turn the spell scrolls you can find on these lists into a Caster Disk if you want.

Would you be surprised to learn that Floppys are still in use & distributed today?

Hell, there are actual External Floppy Disk Drives being made that you can use on your modern computer like how you use an External Hard Drive via connecting them with USB.

Wow, I wasn't aware of that.Β  I'll have to get my hands on some, if only for the nostalgia of using them again.

I'm no Harry Potter fan, but that's one nice floppy drive.Β Β  Haven't seen a casing that grade in probably 20 years.

Thanks. I'm currently working on promo art for a stuff pack I just finished for Sims 4, dubbed Oughties Big Rapids Living.

I recreated about 12 buildings from Big Rapids as they looked in 2008-2010. And made several signs and posters, and a few clothes, and a barstool, to match the theme. Hoping to have Biggby Coffee of Big Rapids available by tonight on Mod the Sims. And it has custom signage to closer match real life. I think players are gonna love the houses, and Mancino's.

These would be useful at Hogwarts, especially at a satellite campus within the 'Muggle' world like in Los Angeles or London.

Maybe not Hogwarts since if I remember right, muggle technology doesn't work in the wizarding world.

Still, a wizarding school would probably be more interesting if one can somehow use technology alongside traditional spellcasting.
