Description
1/125 s at f/5.6, Quantaray 70-300mm at 300mm (Macro), 100 ISO (RAW)I love finding discarded things in parking lots that go well with other things a few inches away in the same parking lot! I had to kick it into place on the yellow parking spot separator line.
Wow! Although I didn't actually use this feature of my new lens in this shot, I just found out while shooting that the macro on -this- lens ranges between 200mm and 300mm, versus the fixed 300mm of the last lens. I'll need to play with that!

Yeah...one of the problems with using macro without a tripod is that if you move the slightest bit forward or backward, you're out of focus. Add to that snow...like active snow...and it was just tough. I need to practice manual focusing more, which is what this was! (Practice!) Thanks!

I know, I know.. I wouldn't trust manual focusing, to be honest. I'm using AF everywhere, where possible..

Well, that's the thing...supposedly, manual focus is better than auto-focus.

By no means more accurate, though..

Huh. Probably not in this case (i.e. I was less accurate than the sensor), but sometimes electronics make the wrong choice, I'm guessing?

Sometimes. But mostly it's correct. Always verify using the viewfinder, though..

True, true. It's tough when you're freezing and rushing in the cold snowy weather though.

*Laughs* I was thinking maybe the washer isn't far enough off-center...so it leaves you feeling imbalanced? I have no idea! I need to read more books on composition!

maybe that's it........it needs to be more off center....I guess I don't know...
..........I'm wishy washer tonight get it

Nice shot. Great colours. I like the composition on this photo.
I agree with you on the "rule of thirds" and all, but this could be the exception to the rule. If an object is symmetrical then it's fine to center it.

Aren't you going to weigh-in on the centered versus non-centered debate?

Renilicious In reply to amarand [2005-11-25 12:58:01 +0000 UTC]
Rule of thirds, darling. Ain't nothing wrong with the composition as it is AT ALL. I think the impact would be lost if it was centered. The way it is now, it leads your eye in and gives you the message that the colour and basic shape of the subject is what the picture is about. If it were centered, it'd be less interesting because focus would be on the round thingamy, which is boring in itself.

Yup. When I saw the rusty thing, it was sitting on the pavement. Probably 100,000+ people had walked over it and never gave it a first or second look. I see those things everywhere, and then I saw the line a few feet over and I was like "brown...yellow...hmmm." People forget that rust has a nice brownish/reddist color...and that "yellow lines" are a really pleasant yellow. So pretty good design elements all around and rust has a real earthy color palette too. YUM! (And thank you!)

I would. Maybe crop a little from the right part. What do you think?

So you'd push the subject -more- away from center, correct?

Too ambiguous in its current position? It's like "are you going to center it or...damnit will you just make up your mind!?" *Laughs* Yeah.

Ambiguous is the perfect adjective - it seems to be struggling for one position or another.

Yeah, that's the one fear I have...that it's ambiguous, not just tension-filled.

So that's a double yellow line?
Interesting... I would not have noticed that unless you had pointed it out.
Very nice, I love the colours.... great to see something you would normally have walked passed without paying any attention to.
I notice that it says "Advanced Critique Encouraged"..... does that mean you want me to pick holes? I can't really.
Maybe the only thing I would have done is centred the washer a bit...... but that is me being super critical. I love it as it is!

amarand In reply to Tenshadesofgrey [2005-11-24 20:07:57 +0000 UTC]
Yup. It's actually a single-yellow line (parking-lot type) but...yeah. When you get close-up to things they look totally different!
OOoh, centering is something that should be done only if you have a really good reason to! In artistic photography, placing something in the center has meaning, just as placing the subject in the extreme corners or at the rule-of-thirds junction points. When I took the shot, I actually placed it almost dead center...maybe a little bit to the right. When I cropped it, I intentionally placed it in the upper right-hand quandrant because of the subject's "direction" toward the upper-left. I guess I wanted a little tension? I'm guessing that's what you're feeling, maybe?
And, yes, I manually set each of my images to "Advanced Critique Encourged" because I love for people to make recommendations (just like this!) and if I don't have a good enough reason to let it sit the way it is, I actually try to change it to make it better! Then again, if six other people say the same thing...I might re-crop it. *Laughs* Adobe Camera Raw is my friend!
Thanks for the nice, meaty comment!

I'm not sure if it's tension.. but I suppose, yeah... it does make me feel a bit like I want to move the damn washer!! ha ha I suppose that could be classed as tension
If that is what you were after, then you succeeded!!
As for centering...... I'm a cow for it.

Thank you! Yeah...those yellow lines are designed to be BRIGHT. I did this one by eye, because it was snowing lightly, and I didn't have time to whip out my White Balance (WhiBal) cards. Otherwise, the color would have been more accurate. But the brown and yellow is really a good color combo in general. People seem to react well to it.
