Even in the dry lands Niv passed places where it seemed there were no living things, but she always inevitably came across esk. Her kind hid under rocks in canyons, explored dark tunnels with critters, and looked after blooming cacti.

In the middle of the week Niv paused in a desert oasis. She held herself still while a breeze brushed over her back. The breeze shifted the grasses and the fronds on the trees. It even chased ripples across the water. Insects buzzed around her but Niv remained still, waiting.

Something moved under the surface of the oasis pool. A shadow shifted across the rocks. In the distance something mountainous rolled over, and was that…a walking cactus?

Niv held in laughter and tried to count the esk emerging around her.
