“Uhm…what’s it doing?”

Frosted Stitches nudged the white phalanges with his nose and snorted. They had stopped home for a while so Sashaq could have her mane trimmed and Stitches asked to have his feathers shaved (their last adventure in the smoke-filled forest had left the striped hair singed, tangled, and itchy. Now, deep in the mountains, they had found a cavern where the floor was littered with bones. There was a path through the debris that the pair had followed, bringing them to a cavern where they found the skulls – and the skeleton.

Sashaq tilted her head and inched closer. “Is it…falling?”

“How can it be falling? It’s not moving.”

“Well, no, but…”

Stitches and Sashaq stepped delicately around the human skeleton. It had not moved since they encountered it but Sashaq could swear it was on the verge of some gesture. Why else would it be posed in such a dramatic way? Perhaps it had been dancing before their arrival and frozen, holding ever so still, just before they entered the cavern…

“Can we leave, now?” Sashaq asked. “This place feels creepy. It’s like something is watching us but there’s no one here – just these bones.”

“Mhm.” Stitches nodded and began weaving back through the other skulls scattered across the floor.
