- What Dwells Beneath the Canopy - 794 word count The invisible pull snatched Niv up when she was sitting where the waves met the sand. She had been annoyed by pulls and sent immediately into a temper since becoming an esk, but lately she was curious about them. Feeling one meant that someone was crying out as she had for Scamper. Often she experienced a pull from nearby, however, a few times she had been phased miles away. This time Niv blinked and found herself leagues from her boundary in a jungle so humid that she felt as though she were underwater. Birds nearby took flight from surprise at her appearance and she admired their colorful plumage against the canopy. Niv guessed it was midday from the light filtering through the treetops, but no clear sprawl of shadow confirmed this. Niv shrugged to herself and followed the invisible pull, stepping over gnarled roots twisting across the soil. When she passed ferns glistening from the humidity she bumped them, squinting her eyes in delight at the sound of water flung against flora. Ahead, mist crept across the ground like the ghost of a river and she waded through it.
When she came to an upward slope she paused, listening with her head tilted. A colorful frog caught her attention, but when she approached it for investigation the metaphysical force yanked on her like–
“Like a leash,” Niv thought, feeling the first tickling of annoyance.
Niv took an experimental step towards the frog and when the force yanked at her again her temper began to boil.
“Stop that,” she thought at the force and tried to teleport to a different spot – only to find she was blocked!
A desperate cry from up the mountain seemed to answer her. It did not sound quite animal…was it human?
Something felt very wrong and it seemed it was all she could do to resist the pull. Though she returned to following it she slowed her pace and made a point to look at everything she passed.
“Some esk may take your constriction as urgency,” Niv grumbled at the pull, “but you should know I hate to be controlled.”
The trees finally thinned and even the frogs were quiet as Niv followed short stacks of stone towards a colossal tree. Niv followed the trunk up and up and up until she lost sight of it against the coil of branches and the crown of leaves. Great swinging vines hung low and some even touched down to the ground by the base of the tree where there was a shrine.
Stones were stacked around a central fixture that stood on a flared base nested by crispy brown ferns. In the middle of the flat, dewdrop shaped top stone was a white token that had been shattered down the middle. Pulses of energy that matched the pull that held Niv came from the shrine. The force of it was weaker than before and gave off a feeling of distress.
For a moment Niv was struck with a memory of another shrine like this where she had stood behind a human – the blond one that haunted her daydreams. In her mind’s eye he wore an explorer’s rucksack and sketched in a journal. After a moment he folded the journal, placed a palm on either side, and held it up to the shrine. Then he touched his fingers to the brim of his hat and brought his hands, still pressed against the journal covers, to his chest and bowed his head.
The vision of the man faded under the distressed press of the shrine’s pull.
Fix me, begged the shrine.
Niv glared at the shrine token. Even despite her anger Niv was not sure it was best to heal the shrine. The dying plants around the shrine were either in need of nutrients, something she could remedy by sharing spirit energy to repair the shrine token, or they signified the connection to the shrine that had been draining the area had been severed. If blind trust was what this shrine wanted it had chosen the wrong esk! Niv reared up then, intent on smashing the token to save other esk from being caught in a trap.
Then she thought of Scamper as she did now in moments of anger.
“No. Not…worth it.” After all, the shrine was doing no further harm to the area – at the moment.
Niv pivoted and was glad to find she could push away from shrine’s hold on her. She would not stay here any longer even if she had to walk all the way back to her boundary.
Movement caught at the corner of her eye and Niv’s gait hitched. Some animal was following her! Was this a creature of the jungle or some manifestation of the shrine?

That looks really nice! The colouring is a bit different from your usual, right, with the smaller strokes on Niv and the parrot? It looks good at any rate. I also like how you tied the quest in with her memories.

Thank you! Yes, it's a painterly style I wanted to work more on this year since I did a lot of line art and cell shading last year. Yes! Niv is going to start to remember the human owner she had when she was a sheep a bit more over the mountain events.
