and another day of hope to cross off the calender
of naive 'knowings' lead astray.

Carefully constructed days
(and appearences)
leaving what behind?
no bottles in the sea,
no secret joys to draw from.
romances in the dark?
no.
classic or modern,
the debate is moot.

Instead I have inner intimacy
and assurances that I'm strong,
but how many times must I be told?
I know, I know, I know.

I know
but I will not surrender
even if I fail to survive.
for you gave me strength
so I would carry pride.

But in denying me simple joy
you've not only thickened my skin,
you've jaded me into patterns.
