Core Membership commission for AudeS Working on it was a bit more difficult than expected, because originally I failed when working on the smoke: the liquid white ink refused to obey this time and turned into an uneven layer looking dirty, to be honest, so I had to spend pretty a lot of time trying to fix this digitally, as traditionally it happened to be impossible.
Seems like I managed to make it look fine, although the smoke was supposed to be more 'transparent', heh. However, I like the result, and the background together with the character Yamato turned out quite the way I wanted from the very beginning.

I'm awfully sorry that I made you wait so long, dude. At least, I hope that the result picture looks good enough to be worthy of all the waiting

So, now of all the debts I have only one unpaid commission (if the commissioner hasn't changed their mind yet), one trade and two gifts to do. Soon I'm going to have enough time to start working on my projects more intensively. As said before, I'm going to keep commissions closed for a while, because, to be perfectly honest, I'm sick of the realization that I work endlessly but the money I receive barely helps me survive. I'm in need of finding a normal job again.
However, my core membership's going to expire in July, so closer to that moment I will open a couple slots. Keep this in mind~

Enjoy!

OC Shimizu Yamato (c)
Tools used for this piece: colored pencils, watercolor pencils, colored liners, liquid white ink.

I actually saw this when it was just oploaded, but never commented on it.  So why not put my 2 cents in.

Great pic! When it comes to anthro chars, dragons and reptiles are my personal faves. Funny how you made this few days before i was going on a vacation to Japan.

Also Im currently playing some remade Spyro games(Spyro reignited trilogy) You could try watching some trailers or videos on YT or google some pics. Even though they are a mere cartoonish style, their designs are amazing (Least IMO) Great inspiration source if you wanna make more of such characters in the future.

Some examples. Old compared to new. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCyncJ…

One of my personal faves. www.youtube.com/watch?v=D345yi…

Oh thank you so much! Although I don't think I'll have dragon ocs myself, these examples can be really useful for filling my personal 'detail data base' when figuring out a character for a ych auction for example? I might do an auction like this someday when I have time. Been wanting to try this thing for really long.

You're welcome. And that's sounds great.

Maybe it could be one of your next projects(If changing your mind about having dragon OCs) Like drawing Zven, Stas, Bern or other of your OCs in this kind of dragon form. You could call it MLSD(My Last Spyro Dragons) Or just MLD(My last dragons) That'd be cool. I can definitely see Bern as one. Don't be surprised if it'd get you a fair bit of new followers.

PS: And sorry if you feel that i was shoving this down your throat. I know you've said you're not a gamer, but it's just im so freakishly excited about this. This game is a 20 year old childhood memory being revived to me and i just wanted to share it with someone, who are into such kind of characters. Thought you might still like the designs and concept.

Wooow! This is beautiful! I love Japan, so this just hits a bunch of my aesthetics! Just like AudeS said, I absolutely love how it has an antique, yellowed-paper Japanese feel. Amazing shading in the grass and Yamato's scales! The smoke looks fine to me.

Man, I'm happy that my idea of making this picture reminding of traditional Japanese art pieces indeed gives the proper feel! Thanks a lot

I did take a few days to get to commenting here, but I must say, this is definitely worth the wait. It wasn't that long actually, and it can take time with RL being a thing in the background too. Anyway, this image of Yamato has a really lovely feel reminding me of older Japanese drawings due to the tint and paper used here. It really gives the whole image a whole other feeling, which definitely creates this Japanese atmosphere for it. Now, the background, of a lovely lake with a rural village and a lovely mountain chain. Which does actually work well for his home. And my goodness, the details given to the water reflections and the sky with all those birds. It is truly giving this scene life. The foreground with the grass so lush and tall, and the bamboos behind Yamato. The relaxing feeling this gives off work well for him catching a short break to smoke a little.
Now to the star of the show. Yamato, the Shogun with heart. You reall worked well to bring his design into your style, as his slender form is really well depicted here, with his scales also having gotten an immense amount of detail, which does really make him look beautiful. Apart from them, the whiskers really turned out perfectly here, they are perfectly flexible in appearance and long, similar to the carp whiskers that they are inspired by. And nicely seen, also his fur, forming a mane on his head and going down along his spine to the very tip of his tail, where it grows in an almost fan-like shape. And I like how you drew his leg, including the feet as they are slightly hidden in the grass, giving him a connection to the ground. Like everything else, his clothes really reflect the movement of winds perfectly well, while the smoke coming from Yamato and his pipe goes westward. The composition of everything is so in unison, bringing everything into perfect harmony.
Relecting on the past, his face can tell me much. It is a man he once knew, a man he loved. The death of so many loved once, be it old age or injury. This melancholy is quite apparant in his eyes.

I realized too late that I gave Yamato a wrong eye color ;___; Only after one more art piece of Kaz I found this out.
I could pretend that that is color distortion due to the warm colors of the atmospere and the light in particular, but no xP
However, in fact it's fixable, and if you want me to change his eye-color to the canon, I can do it easily^^
And I'm happy that I managed to give the picture that atmophere reminding of old Japanese art pieces!^^
So glad you like it, as I'm also honestly pround of the result. And reading your comments analysing the smallest details is always pleasure! They actually really help me decide if I express my ideas clearly enough and also find out what is drawing attention the most. Thank you for that you find time for sharing your opinion! And forgive me for being so slow at replying ;__;

Ah, there is no issue for me, but if you want to fix it, go ahead. Personally I just think of it as a result of the hue the picture has by its very nature. In any case, I always love leaving lengthy and deep commentaries. Even though I hardly have time these days for doing that outside of commissions, it is a very nice thing to do for both sides. And especially this picture deserves the praise for the pretty much perfect composition.

And no worries, life is a busy thing, I fear.

Time to give a decent comment because it's so freaking awesome and i can't ignore it from both faving and commenting. It's quite difficult for me to start because everything is pure awesomess. The background is stunning. It reminds me of an old photo that instills serenity. I love how grass and clothing flow in the wind not to mention the puff of smoke coming out Yamato's mouth. It's truly dynamic, flowing and really natural. While i am looking at this Masterpiece, i image crickets chirping with the warm sunlight that caresses my face while relaxing. The details of scales are awesome, i am impressed by the amount of skill put in making them.
Great job with the scratchy texture of the bamboo shafts, i love the birds you can see from distance and how the tip of right whisker is still visible despite the smoke. Elegant touch
Keep the amazing work up!

Splendid detail, in everything from the plough of birds to the scratchy texture of the bamboo shafts. Personally very fond of the kiseru; have a soft spot for Japanese pipes, but never seem to get the simple elegance quite right myself.

If you do not mind the curiosity, what sort of paper did you draw this on? You have completely outdone yourself with the cloth here; the rough grain of fine wool is fantastic.

Amaryllex In reply to Tinselfire [2018-04-06 20:05:23 +0000 UTC]

I used to be a fan of Japanese culture and of anime several years ago, and I still have a soft spot for Japan myself^^ So I wanted to give this art piece the feel of something reminding of anime.
When working on this picture, specially for capturing the mood that I wanted to express here, I watched one of my most favorite anime shows 'Samurai Champloo' and one of my most favorite movies about Japan 'The Last Samurai'. For some reason, I had the feeling that this character Yamato could have something similar with the character Jin from the first and Katsumoto from the second. While speaking of the color palette, I realize now that it has something similar to the color palette of the cover of the cd that I had the anime 'Ninja Scroll' on st.kp.yandex.net/images/film_b… Oh my, seems like the period of my fangirling over everything Japanese impacted me more than I thought xD

Glad you like this piece! As for the paper, it's this z2.adlibris.com/35/adbb6d8a-e5… Being honest, it's the same paper that I've been drawing on from 2014, just with using watercolor pencils (dry) for shading and adding some canvas effect digitally^^ So glad that the clothes' texture came out quite the way I wanted!

Thanks a bunch, Kaz! Your art piece together with the piece of XseArt were perfect references to help me examine the character's design, actually^^
I guess, just the fact that you both worked so woderfully on the scales made me feel like I absolutely needed to try to detail his skin too. Holy sheep, that was so fun to work on, very relaxing!
