Color Palette: Quinacridone Red, Mayan Red, Isoindonone Yellow, Cadmium Lemon, Indigo

I used everything I've learned this year to return to the subject of cardinals in a flowering tree.

First of all, I learned that cardinals, to me, are not a good subject for a monochrome painting. What I love about cardinals is their ability to stand out from the sky and the foliage.

Second, I know so much more about colors and color mixing, and can come up with color palettes that I think are truly interesting. Thinned down indigo makes for a beautiful, old-fashioned postcard color of sky.

Third, I learned so many more techniques for conveying texture that I think I did a much better job of conveying the feathers of the cardinals.
