Description Tree asset for my FFIX Terra scene. You can see the concept here: [link]

I tested a few new things with this project on ZBrush and on my texturing process and I'm quite happy with what I learned and the final result!

The pink variation was made with vertex painting inside UDK. I just multiplied my tree texture with a pink parameter and vertex painted it to the original texture. Also the strings are a simple shader made with only one parameters and some constants. I have no other textures than the ones I'm showing there.

Software used: 3ds max, ZBrush, Photoshop, XNormal, nDo2, UDK

Looks awesome! Are you blogging this on polycount too or just dA for now?

Thanks! I haven't made a Polycount thread for now. I will when I'll have more things to show.

sketchbook threads are pretty chilled out if you wanna use those too. Looking forward to it ^^. I'm not on there often either just using sketchbook every time i have something small to show.

I'm not sure because I'm going very slowly for this scene so it might take me a while before starting my own thread. I'm posting regularly in the "What are you working on?" thread though.

hm, that is interesting, I guess I should use that thread more often. Maybe then I wouldn't feel like I'm not much of a poster haha

I'm not much of a poster either but I think it's still good to post in this thread once in a while. Just to show that you still exist on Polycount!

you´re welcome!
Did you start this model with the high in Zbrush or the low in Max?

amaterasu111 In reply to AstroChompski [2012-12-14 10:04:04 +0000 UTC]

I started in 3ds max with a mid poly model that I used both for the high poly in ZBrush and the low poly.

Ok, cool again, nice job
I should try a tree too sometime

Very nice job! The high-poly looks great. I personally don't like the red in the tree bark, but that's just a personal preference, it will most likely look wonderful in the scene.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much! I'm not fond of the red/pink either but it's in the concept so I had to put it!

I'd love to see how you made the planes into leaves with the transparency
also, why did you use 2 normal mapping programs, xnormal and nDo2?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

amaterasu111 In reply to 543Bs0Za [2012-11-28 18:18:58 +0000 UTC]

For the leaves, it's just a plane with an alpha embedded in the alpha channel of my diffuse. Nothing particular. You can see a closeup here: [link]

I didn't use XNormal and nDo2 for the same thing. I used XNormal to bake my high poly model and my low poly model to get the Normal Map, AO and height map I need to make the diffuse. Once I had all of this, I used nDo2 to make another AO based on the normal map I got from XNormal. The AO you can get this way have more information and makes your diffuse map look MUCH better. I used both the XNormal and nDo2 AO to make my diffuse. For a comparison, my XNormal AO looked like that: [link] while my nDo2 AO looked like that: [link] .

Sweet tips! I was just saying that I needed a copy of nDo2. Been using nDo for some stuff, but the newer version looks killer. Thanks for the comparison links too.

No problem! nDo2 is awesome! I tried the new dDo beta and it's quite awesome too but I don't think it can be used as a standalone. I need to play a little more with it!

This should be categorized under fan art, but looks cool none the less. FF9 needs more loving

amaterasu111 In reply to PolyMune [2012-11-26 23:41:04 +0000 UTC]

Considering that it's only an asset, I don't really consider it as fanart unlike the whole scene but I guess it is fanart so I'll change the category! There are a lot of tributes to FF9 when it comes to characters but not environments!

PolyMune In reply to amaterasu111 [2012-11-26 23:54:49 +0000 UTC]

I know right? It's sad! FF9 had some of the best environments in a final fantasy game (still really love FF6 and FF7's environments as well!).

You're on your way to a good start! keep it up, i'd love to see! Ha ha maybe i should make a 3D zidane to go int your environment

amaterasu111 In reply to PolyMune [2012-11-27 00:01:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think FF9 have the best environments of the series along with FF10. FF6 and 7 are my two favorite FF games but I don't like their environments as much even if I do love the sci-fi atmosphere of these games!

Thank you very much! I'm not a character artist and I don't really like the design of FF9 characters so I'll pass!

Very very much agree <3 It's amazing you're taking a stab at them, brings back some fond memories!!
I read your front page the other day..and was blown away to see that you are also French and female So excited to meet another French girl actively pursuing the game industry The industry needs more females, all the females!

(I am French Canadian, however. Been always interested in visiting France, how is it??).

Hhaha well! You're definitely improving on your environment work. I'm so wish washy, I keep darting between characters and environments I really like both. So I just classify myself as a 3D artist.
